Elvis Juice!
Whiles listening to ‘The Session’ yesterday (14.8.17) on the Brewing Network, Motorworks Brewing stated they buy Grapefruit Oil. They said you get a more Grapefruit taste than using the fruit.
I found some on google at Holland and Barrett

Re: Elvis Juice!
Interesting! Worth experimenting with.
Mine is going down a treat now. I can only have one 330ml glass at a time though as it's a sensory explosion. I look forward to it at the end of a beery eve.

Re: Elvis Juice!
I couldn't believe the smell in my brew shed yesterday when I went in to knock the fridge down from 21 to 18 degC. Been a while since I brewed such a hoppy number and since it was all pellets they're pretty much all in the FV! I suppose that means a lot of flavour is being stripped from the beer but never mind.
Citrus isn't even in yet!
I'm using the CML US Pale Ale yeast, off like a rocket so far.

Re: Elvis Juice!
Chucked in dry hops and zest yesterday. 5 grapefruit and 3 oranges... the aroma of the grapefruit zest was nothing compared to the oranges, no idea if that's normal or because they've been kicking around too long!
I think it'll be a lovely brew whatever though.

Re: Elvis Juice!
Well without having a real one to taste side by side, I think I've brewed something pretty close here!

Sounding good Jambo. Did you hit the original ABV?
Re: Elvis Juice!
Hi Alex, I didn't check the FG, but the OG was spot on..

Re: Elvis Juice!
Bet it's a belter. My goal for 2018 is to brew lower ABV beers. My pales always end up in the 6.5% range, and that's a problem on a hot summers day!
Re: Elvis Juice!
Managed to get on a shareholders' tour of the brewery quality labs this week. Asked about Elvis Juice - it is 'dosed' with an extract after filtration etc. but they insist that the majority of the flavour does come from peel added earlier. Almost as much peel as hops apparently. They are using gas chromatography kit to determine the best times for all flavour additions to get best utilisation, they're not dicking about, it's quite astonishing.
Also tasted fresh vs 6 month old Punk IPA side by side and the flavour and aroma difference was incredible. These brews do not age well.

You should watch Charlie Bamforth on the subject of fresh. There's a YT video when he was in Oz that's worth tracking down. Fresh is best.

I agree that hoppy beers are generally better fresh, but I think a bottle conditioned beer ages better than a force carbonated beer.Jambo wrote:Also tasted fresh vs 6 month old Punk IPA side by side and the flavour and aroma difference was incredible. These brews do not age well.

Re: Elvis Juice!
Hi guys,
Here's my latest Elvis Juice inspired beer. It's completely incredible. The grapefruit and orange taste completely natural and not synthetic like Elvis Juice.
The only tweak I'll make next time is up the bitterness to 35 IBU
Drinking a glass right now. Only three weeks old and completely ready.
I fermented at 18c for a week then cranked up to 23c for 3.5 days for dry hops and second zest addition.

Re: Elvis Juice!
What yeast did you use to achieve 84% (apparent) Attenuation?
And what temperature did you mash at?
Final (cheeky question): are you brewing at altitude? Otherwise, how else did you achieve a 70C boil?

Re: Elvis Juice!
Hey Cobnut. Have amended the boil temp.
I mashed at 66c for 1 hr. The 200g of sugar helped bring the FG down too.
I used S05. Cheers!
