Abbot Ale

Post by Andy » Tue Mar 28, 2006 1:23 pm

I'm a fan of Abbot Ale and there's a recipe in Dave Lines BBLTYB book so I think that will be my next effort. I'll post the recipe up here when I get home....

Anyone tried DL's recipe ? I found a web post out there which reckons it's a good replica!

Not sure on the sparging method yet - might give fly sparging one more go but this time WITHOUT using the dregs of grain bags! The first time I fly sparged all was well so the setup will do it! :D

I'll get the pale malt from the Hogs Back tomorrow night, got everything else from the LHBS.

Keep us informed on how it turns out as this may be the recipe for my first real brew ( once i have cobbled all the equipment together !)

I thought you guys were steering away from the very large brewery's, such as "Fullers", who were buying up the little people, namely "Gales".

Have you not seen Camra's campaigns against Greene King for buying up small brewerys. Namely "Ridleys" my local brewery & "Belhaven Brewery", Scotlands largest independant brewer?

Although Abbott is not a bad pint, I don't tend to go for any Greene King beers any more. I try & always have a small regional brewerys beer. I usually find them a much better pint too.

I guess it is ok to make them as home brew though, as you aren't exactly supporting Greene King financialy are you. :P

Nasty Greene King! That had all been off my radar I must admit.

In that case, I will take great delight in supping my own clone version of Abbot rather than handling over my hard spent to Greene King for the original :P

Apart from Old Speckled Hen, they're also responsible for producing the following, along with their own branded beers such as IPA & XX Mild etc:

Suffolk Strong Vintage Ale

Hens Tooth

Ruddles County

All Belhaven Beers still produced

All Ridleys Beers still produced

You know what, you've got a point DAAB. We should launch a campaign to encourage all homebrewers to brew clones of those brews (and breweries) that have been ruined by Greene King...Brew it instead of buying it! ;)

OK, in organised mode today. Just finished setting the kit up in the garage for tomorrows brew, HLT and burco filled with requisite amounts of liqour from POU filter, grist mixed, tubing being cleaned. Time for a homebrew B)

Yep, me too.

Just filtered my water ready for tomorrows brew day.

Funnily enough, I'm doing a Greene King product also :o

I'm also supporting our new Scotts member on this forum, Bod, by brewing a Belhaven 80/- clone.

I've just started my yeast starter too. Now to give you all a laugh. I got my Woodfordes live yeast out the fridge from my last brew, but I think it's been slowly fermenting whilst in the fridge. I opened the pot & most of all the good yeast, is now all over my kitchen walls...

Ooops... :(

Nice one RR!

Good to see a fellow forum member is brewing up tomorrow also...

Remember to take lots of pictures B)

I'm using yeast slurry harvested from my previous brew, just hope it will kick off OK. Hasn't exploded yet though and kitchen still intact :P

Good luck mate and we'll both have to report in tomorrow as to how things went.

Wish I'd had camera handy whilst yeast was erupting over the kitchen.

Hope your brew goes well too.
