Mash Tun Paddle Timber Project

Post by barneey » Sat Sep 29, 2012 11:16 am

Having seen quite a few threads on here on other members mash tun paddle builds I thought I would have a go at making a few:-

Progress will be slow but I`ve at least made a start this morning sorting out a couple of suitable pieces of timber from the rack.

I have decided that I would make them in beech, anyone see any reason why beech wouldnt be suitable?

The two planks I have are fairly decorative in appearance and are approx 11" wide x 39" long x 1" thick, so could in theory get 4 paddles.

Just need to sort a design etc. Any ideas more than welcome :)

Pieces of wood + progress so far (or lack of it)...

Well that one is certainly thinking outside the box :) looks like some medieval weapon. I`m going to see how many blanks I can get from one piece of timber first then decide if I want to make any more from the second piece.

For the design I was going to keep them on the brewing theme , ie barley grain as shown + prehaps hop cones / bottle etc, or might just drill small holes.

:) looks more like a hop spreader to me.

Further progress on paddle today, made a grain template + drawn out design on the timber.

Hi all, I recently saw this post by Barney regarding his brewing paddle and I have decided to have a go at making my own but I am afraid I have fallen at the 1st hurdle ! Where do I source a suitable plank/piece of beech or other suitable type of wood for making the paddle? Can I just rock up to B&Q and buy said planks ? Or do I visit a local timber yard and ask if they have any suitable wood?

Cheers DC

I used to get a fair bit of timber from http://www.britishhardwoods.co.uk/timbe ... l?limit=96 but their stock as reduced quite abit recently.

If you want to make a banana shaped paddle try either Jewson or Travis Perkins, failing that have a look round for specialist timber suppliers in your area or ebay my throw up ,a few pieces worth looking at.

The paddle will be a labour of love to make so choose wisely :!:

That looks like it will be a work of art, the holes look like barley grains. :) cool.

The wood is gorgeous.

Will be watching this! Definitely want to try my hand at a mash paddle, will have to look out for a plank of hardwood somewhere...
