The New HLT

Post by barneey » Mon Jul 01, 2013 5:43 pm

Nothing special about this HLT + have designed it much in the same way as the previous HLT, fully concealed centre bottom outlet, triclover ballvalve outlet etc.

As I`ve increased the brew length to 100 ltrs it lead to the problem of what HLT donor vessel to buy, I had enough trouble getting a 150 ltr pot for the boiler

So to get over the problem I`m using a standard 80 ltr thermo pot with 2 x 3KW burco elements to enable a quick temp gain for the sparge water whilst mashing, seemed the easiest solution to the problem.

Just need to fit the new sight glass & thermowell then it will be up and running.

On all my old HLT`s I`ve used a simple mashmaster thermometer ( I don't have any of these left now  ) as it provides a quick and easily readable gauge. So as to combine this with the electric brewery build I`ll install a thermowell + PT100 probe to measure and control the temp.

As for making a bomb out of the thing I`ll just use the thermo box tabs but wont click them down, so yep just resting.

In the time it's taken my to build mine...6months... you've built this in about a week. I like the elements in the base. Do they go black after the first use :D

Rain near stopped play this evening but with the aid of a sun canopy (only thing its good for at the moment) I managed to fit the sight glass complete with bottom outlet (slightly altered MrLards design for the bottom outlet), again everything fully concealed in the bottom insulation :D The bottom of the clear sight tube is near enough level with the bottom of the floor so with the exception of the waste water in the pipework zero+ measurements can be taken.

Cheers, as this will be the last brewery build I`m ever going to do, I wanted to include / add the best bits from all the other pots I`ve made and the knowledge gained from these sites over the last 2 years, having said that with the speed things are still progressing on the homebuild front, who knows :)

Perhaps when you've sold it all on you can rent out that wing of your house?
