My Last EVER Mash Tun Build 50ltr Pot EDIT 80ltr

Post by barneey » Sat Mar 10, 2012 11:56 am

Hi All,
This is my last EVER Mash Tun Build, managed to complete the task in just over 3 hours.

I normally build all my equipment with an offset draining hole so its tip-able, however as this pot is for a fellow member he asked for a centre draining pot.

Easy enough to do with 15mm copper but I always use stainless when building, normally 1/2 pipework and fittings.

I dont like a lot of cutting of the base so decided to see if it were possible to cut just 3 holes to complete the build and am glad to say everything just about fitted in.

In the last photo the paper is used to show where the stainless disc will fit. Wont bore you with many more details but heres the pics...

I`m not supplying the tap for this build, but would have thought the 3 piece standard BES s/s ball valve would be the best option all round.

If you have a good look under the outer bottom skin of the thermo pot and start fitting burco elements etc in the centre / offset outlets etc, it soon becomes apparent that the insulation at the centre of the pot is thicker than at the edge. When I have built the offset pots in the past I`ve tried before to cut down the elbows to get away with just 3 holes but it has never worked, I`ve always had to cut a tounge of stainless out to make it fit (just not enough room).

As this is my last Mash build :^o [-X [-o< [-o< I wanted to see, if by once again cutting down the elbow and knowing there is more thickness under the centre section of the pot it was possible to get away with just the 3 holes. Its very tight but achievable. In my opinion it looks a better job, but then again whos going to see it?

The only thing left to do is water test + builders foam the hole. But will leave it quite a few days for the JB to go off.

Cheers

Just cant resist this building malarkey, not a mash tun this time but the parts for another member to complete his build.

:)

Mine is now finished! Made a cork washer for the skin fitting, PTFE taped up the threads and assembled the pipework. Currently leak testing and all is dry so far :)

Good to hear its not leaking :)

Just one thing I forgot to mention about your build, and re reading the above, I do normally grind down the elbow to make things fit better, this may also apply if you need to fit a washer.

Just for future reference for others with skin fittings they vary quite a bit in the manufacturing process.

Luckily it all fits nicely with the stainless washer (minus the tab) supplied with the fitting against the elbow.

Andy,

Did you buy the nipple of the shelf or did you cut it yourself?
Can you let me know the part number or the length end to end.

Thanks

:D :D :D

Dont worry Andy I wont mention anything about your nipple (problem).

The link you need is http://www.bes.co.uk/products/165b.asp BARREL nipple 14451 1/2, this will make you the tippable version of pot, not the centre drainage hole as above.

Also see viewtopic.php?f=6&t=43852&p=488727&hili ... on#p488727

For the centre draining one, I cut and thread my own pipe.

Too many nipples!!

I'll have to speak nicely to the machine shop at work and see if they will tap it for me.
What size pipe do i need to cut 1/2 NPT or bsp onto ?
