Yet another IC thread I'm afraid

I've been building the coil for my IC, and now wondering if I need an inner coil as well. I've got all the connectors and hose adapters, just need to fit them.

The coil has a diameter of 25cm, with 16 rotations (about 12.5m of 10mm pipe). It's designed to sit over my two kettle elements in my FV boiler, as well as not interfere with the hop strainer. It's probably a bit tall for my boiler, but I'm not too fussed at the moment.





Threading the pipe on was a real labour of love. I kinda regretted starting it about 10 minutes in, but got there in the end!

I'm now debating adding an inner coil to give more surface area. Is it worth it? The displacement would be increased and I'm questioning my sanity to be threading another coil on another set of aluminium bars; however it would certainly be unique.

I'd go for another coil with a separate cold feed and possibly a separate outlet as well. There is no point in adding length if all you are doing pushing hot water through. That looks superb though, I admire you patients

Not had much time for making additions to the brew kit, but finally got the inner coil made and all plumbed together. Pretty happy so far - will have a test boil and cool over the weekend to see how it goes.

There is one input hose (blue tap) which feeds to the bottom of both coils. Each coil has its own output hose (red taps) with a valve so they can be independently altered and isolated completely if required.

The inner coil and the bracing took much longer than I thought, but the bracing means it can be picked up as a single piece. It is surprisingly heavy when full of water!

Very impressive, I would not isolate when first added to the boil though you may get something blow off as the water in the coil is boiled. That is 10mm soft copper pipe isn't it?

As escapizm says,always make sure the valves are open when placing IC in the boiler as you may blow a connection apart!

Nice work ...........This isn't meant as a negative comment but I would have soldered the joints......much cheaper too!

The fixings might be cheaper (and probably look better too), but I don't have a blow torch, so once you've factored the cost of that in there's not much difference. Plus I've never soldered before, so compression was easier for me.

Fair play. Soldering is not an instant skill. I have lots of fun watch people trying to plaster (especially ceilings) I get a lot of work from DIY cock ups

Chilling is a bit of a pain for me at the min, a combiniation of my Brupaks wort cooler, a long garden hose, and a reinforced hose... hot water p155ing all over the back patio, and then cooling the FV in the sink with a load of Ice packs from the freezer..
