Cubitainer / Polypin Can I add gelatine 1 week in to clear?

Post by floydmeddler » Wed May 19, 2010 6:39 am

Basically I filled my cubitainer this day last week at the same time I was bottling. The beer has already had gelatine added and it is completely crystal in the bottles. :D

However, I've moved the cubitainer round a little and it is cloudy now. I would like to clear it again asap. Can I add gelatine directly to it? It is nicely carbonated (cask style!) at the minute and I'm worried that I'll mess this up by adding gelatine as I'll have to gently stir it round a bit. I'm thinking:

Add gelatine AND a little more priming sugar.

Will this work?

Cheers as always folks

If it were me, I'd be inclined to leave it for a few days, as there's every chance it will settle out on it's own, as in theory, the gelatine, will have clumped up the majority of the free floating yeast when it was first put in. So with a bit of luck, these particles are still trapped in the gelatine, which should settle back out again.

If you try to reprime it, then there's every chance, you'll need to add both sugar/DME etc & yeast, given that the above process was used to get the yeast to settle out, then there's every chance, you could add air into the brew at the time, which will significantly reduce it's useable life.
Fermenting - Nothing
Conditioning - Nothing
Drinking - Tea
Planning - Everything, if only I had the time ... !!

I often move my polypins about and it stirs up a bit of gunk. I just leave them for a day or two and it settles out fine. Some times I leave the polypin outside overnight for the lower temp to help the yeast to drop out; typically though the bloody sun has decided to shine and the nights are warming up!
If I had all the money I'd spent on brewing... I'd spend it on brewing!
