Re-Using a Coors Home Draught System

Spring this year should see the return of the Home Draught System in the supermarkets.

You'll have to put up with 10 pints of Grolsch/Carling or Coors Light, but the bottle and tap system are fully reusable with a little bit of force and modification. Excellent for parties, festivals, making sweet sparkling cider etc.
After posting in the iBrew thread, I have decided to make a simple user guide to show how easy these are to re-use.

Once you have got your hands on 1 you will need to make a few small modifications to make it easier to keep re-using.

First you need to get the co2 bulb holder off. These can be hard to remove because they lock in place with a rachet system and you have to snap the rachet tabs to be able to unscrew it.
If you cant do it by hand, gently grip the bulb holder with a pair of pipe grips.

Once the tabs are snapped off, clean up the edges of the plastic with a file or some sandpaper.

You might find removing the co2 bulb hard work, so put the end of a big bolt in the hole at the bottom of the holder, and push against a hard surface.

Replacement co2 bulbs are a tight fit due to the 3 'ridges' inside the bulb holder, so remove them by sanding them off.

Image

I wrapped sandpaper around a big allen key so I could sand all the way down to the bottom to fully remove the ridges.

Image

Once sanded, your bulbs will fit in nicely.

Image

Now all you need to do is sanitise everything, fill it with beer/cider/wine charge it with co2 and put it in the fridge for a couple of days.

Image

The replacement bulbs are slightly longer than the original ones, so as soon as you hear it inject, stop screwing them otherwise the co2 freezes the plastic and makes it very brittle.

Cheapest place I have found new 16gm bulbs is here

This looks absolutely brilliant, I'm definitely going to give it a go when these become available again.
Just a quick question though: do you need to add any sugar for secondary fermentation, or is the gas from the bulb sufficient enough to force carbonate?

Is there a button to inject the gas as required ? Or does the entire cyclinder get injected in one shot ?
Dan!

The 16gm of gas is enough to carbonate the brew and serve it, I would avoid a secondary fermentation as the feed pipe is weighted and will pull sediment through.

The tap has a pressure release valve and is self regulating.
Once you pop the co2 bulb, it will pressurise up the bottle and then you might get a little bit of co2 escape through the valve, it them shuts off and adds pressure as required.

All you need to do is convince your mates to buy them and give you the empties ;)

Not seen any in Sainsburys or Morrisons, I have a Grolsch one that I have been using for a few years now for a takeaway, guess we will have to wait for a Football event!

I figure the more people that ask them when/where we can buy these from it may help.

To all interested parties, I received this today it's even got telephone numbers and email (assuming it's a girl I dont think she fancies me )

Hi Keith

Hope this finds you well. Apologies for not coming back sooner, an over zealous spam filter popped you in my junk mail, sorry about that.

Glad to see you're still a fan of Home Draught. Home Draught is not currently on sale but we are developing it right now and hope to be back on sale soon, even better than before.

Keep watching our website http://www.molsoncoors.com and you'll be able to find out when it's available.

Cheers

I am real and I'll just about forgive your suggestive comments for calling me an ace lass!!

Home Draught will be back later this year - of course the best thing it's made for is enjoying Carling, the nation's favourite lager for over 30 years.

No story Dennis, move along, nothing to see here......;o)
