Counter-pressure fillers are designed to fill bottles with bright, ready carbonated (ie keg) beer from a cornie; the elaborate messing around with CO2 is to prevent oxidation.
British homebrew is generally bottled as real ale, with a little yeast remaining in it which ends up as a paint-thin layer on the bottom of the bottle. The yeast scavenges any oxygen absorbed in the process and provides condition.
Us sources confirm that our way is best - even with counter pressure filling some staling occurs; the sole reason for the US method is when posting beer to US competitions.
