I have decided to modify a corny lid to take a 1/2' pipe projecting into and out of the keg just enough to attach a hose either side, rather than a full length spear which may make fitting the lid awkward. This lid will be used only when secondary fermentation is complete and the beer is ready to serve.

Modifying the lid is what I'm going to do in the future.
A comment on Frothy's diagram: I had a 1/2 ID line from the corny, but was getting too much foam, instead I ran a 3/8 and stepped it up at the base of the engine. No foam. There's a picture of my setup somewhere on this site.

I have sussed it out.
I used a CPC female bulkhead fitting on the lid of a Firestone type keg, and a male on the tube to the engine.
