I think 7's system has a lot less head than mine and I would love to move to a single level system  if only I had the space.

My system is 4.5ft tall and 3.5ft wide

Yeah i noticed 7's. Well i think ill draw up a diagram of a system and post it here tomorro (or mayb tonight as ill be up late watchin snooker).

Cheers for your help Vossy!

Well seen as im up watching the snooker i drew this:

It involves some 3 way valves or alot of single valves. I think this would work well as im quite limited by height in my garden shed. It does look like a bit of a hornets nest/heath robinson and im sure ive probably missed something?!???

All comments wanted/welcome!

The blue lines are cold water for filling HLT/ cooling wort through HE.

Sparging using gravity :?:

Batch sparging or fly sparging :?:

Yup! I drew it using the pump to start but then realised i wouldnt be able to pump into the boiler unless i had another pump. I wanted the boiler on the same level as the mash tun so as to get the pump primed and therfor the wort had to be pumped to boiler. What are your thoughts on this setup?

As you have the space to put the copper/boiler below the mash tun why not go for the standard US 3 tier set up :?

IMO this can be done in less than 6' height

Fly sparging.

Yeah i could do that, but i would need extra height to run off into fermenter?!?

From experience do u think this would be too complex with all the pipes or not?

On second thinking, perhaps the boiler could be below the mash tun and just prime the pum with a little water from the HLT??

Looking at your diagram again you could fill the mash tun with hot liquor by allowing it to reverse flow through your HE and into the mash tun through it's manifold, that would cure your priming problems.

You would have to ensure the HE was also at strike temp if doing this though

EDIT, that set up would self prime anyway

Sorry, not sure if i understand what you mean - Gravity feed hot water into the mash tun from HLT and then down into the pump to prime? But you talk of reversing the pump flow??

Sorry

Sorry Chappie...bit confusing...

To prime my pump I don't need to turn it on, just open the valve from the hlt and it floods naturally

Would that not be the same in the system i drew up? There is a pipe coming from the HLT down to the pump inlet.
