What do I need?

Post by Miso Jace » Wed Sep 10, 2008 4:41 pm

Ok, I'm looking at brewing equipment for my first tentative steps into homebrewing, but there are so many different pieces of gear, I don't know exactly what I need.

Exactly what will I need equipment-wise to begin brewing?

Assuming you start with a kit this should help you decide what you want.

There's been a few discussions of equipment to get started and equipment for All Grain (Advanced brewing) over the last two days, just read your way through the posts in the Kit Brewing and Grain Brewing sections. I am not sure how 100% mine is but when I gave over this list it seemed quite comprehensive:-

I would recommend starting off with :-
1* 23l Litre food grade bucket/ fermenting bin
1* 23l Wine Fermenter/ airlock fermenter
1* 3mtr Syphon tube
1* tap for said tube (cut off a foot of tube and use teh tap to start stop beer going into each bottle)
1* big plastic spoon
bottle capper 7 caps (don't buy the cheapest)
the Kit you want to start off with (get a 3kilo kit in my opinion)
Thermometer
Hydrometer
airlock
bung

If that's too much you could do without the wine fermenter for now, and use PET bottles to get around the need for a capper. Any food grade 23litre un scratched bucket will do. A home brew shop will get you one for £8.10 though and is worth considering.

Thankyou, sorry for my adding to what must be an annoying influx of similar posts, there's just so many threads in here.

I'll make sure I have a more thorough look before posting in future.

Don't worry about asking questions .. it can all seem overwhelming at first . Keep plodding on though.

Will do :D

I've joined 2 local freecycles, and posted an ad on gumtree, but not holding out much hope, so I found a place in Partick that has reasonably priced starter kits.

Now I've just got to get started & then think about how to explain it to my flatmates hehe.

You have to explain making of beer to flatmates? What the hell are they, vegans?

Haha, nah, I just don't know them too well, and I want to keep as much of the brewing process in my room so as not to encroach on the shared space in the flat, and also I don't want them to think I'm a mug & drink everything I make.

Are your flatmates likely to sample your beer? if so I`m sure they won`t mind.

Get a fermenter, a big plastic spoon, a length of pvc hose, a tap for the fermenter, a plastic budget barrel and a simple kit to make up.

The kit will ask you to use sugar but please steer clear of using normal houshold sugar. If you have a home brew shop close by grab some spray malt and use that instead

I'd be very surprised if your flat mates don't want to sample your wares
