Syphon Effect?

I have made my mash tun but have a huge amount of dead space about 3 litres!!



My tun is a false bottom setup like the picture above but without the filled black piece after the tap.

Would this create a syphon and pull more wort through?

Yes, at the moment your tun will only drain as low as the bottom of the tap.

there's no need for the up and over profile, you're creating a more tourtuous route for the wort and the siphon effect will have to work against this, it could be a potential problem and not work as effectively as it could.

I have to have the up and over bit, the picture is probably not exactly how my tun is.

I'll give it a go with the extra on the end of the tap and see how it goes.

The end of the outlet needs to be lower than the pick-up tube,ideally the end of the black piece you have drawn.

The diameter of your outlet pipe could also be an issue. I found I needed to constrict my 15mm copper pipe to around 10mm to achieve the maximum effect - see this thread: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=22121. I have exactly the same set-up as you're using, and the dead space in mine is just 250ml.

As expected I added the extra bit of pipe to bring the output below the bottom of the tun and it syphons perfectly!

Only a cupfull of liquid left

Sounds good too...
Maybe a bit of 10mm pipe of a 15-10mm reducer might help my dead space. (glad I did a board search)
