Will 2L ASDA Smartprice still water bottles hold pressure?

Post by sonicated » Sat May 09, 2009 11:36 am

I would like to brew a lager kit but I havent got any bottles. Will the 2L ASDA Smartprice still water bottles hold pressure? They look like normal PET bottles. I primed my last Coopers lager with 160grams of sugar which was at the right carbonation level so I don't want to risk any bottle bombs!

I could get the fizzy bottles but I would also like to use the water to brew as I would need to treat my tap water with a campden tablet.

I really would not like to chance that...
The general consensus is that if the bottle held fizzy stuff, it'll be fine, if not, don't chance it.

They are okay, they are the same bottles as used for the fizzy stuff.

In general, any PETs that are round and straight sided are okay.

yes, absoloutley fine. I've been using them for 6 months (not the same bottles each time though) without a single problem

I have used them too (well, the Tesco still water ones) with no problems. As above, 99% sure they are the same bottles as for the fizzy water.

I thought that they were different bottles being Still.

PET with the star-fish-shaped indented base are the ones meant to hold pressure, but I suspect that all the star-fish-shaped ridges do is prevent the bottom of the bottle bowing out so it remains standing upright under pressure. Bottles with the inverted dish-shaped base are, I guess, liable to fall over when pressure builds up.

I used some Sainsburys 2L fizzy water bottles for some very fizzy white cider some time back and they were absolutely fine. I have only seen one of these bottles blow once and that was when one fell off a checkout and landed on the lid, went off like a rocket.
