Coiled Hosepipe - Wort Chiller?

Post by adban » Tue May 19, 2009 10:55 am

I have an old hose pipe, it's about 20 metres long and is one of those coiled ones. The diameter is less than a conventional hose pipe and is made of quite rigid plastic. I was wondering if this would be possible to use as a wort chiller. I'm sure it would be however does any one know how efficient this would be? I was thinking of using cable ties to keep the coils together and run it straight off the tap in the garden. Any ideas?
Thanks

It wouldn't make a good immersion chiller as a) plastic is a poor conductor of heat and b) it's probably not food grade. But you could use it as the outer section of a counter-flow chiller.

I might give the hose a go as the budget doesn't just stretch to copper pipe at the moment. At least it will be better than leaving it in the bath for 3 hours. :)
Cheers.

Sorry, I have to agree with Oldspekledbadger. I think it is a bad idea.

The boil will impart flavours of hose plastic. I think it would be better to let it cool in the bath, or leave it to cool au naturel.
