DaaB's false bottom mash tun

Post by tubby_shaw » Wed Dec 20, 2006 6:53 pm

After many years of mashing using a grain bag I decided to build myself a dedicated mash tun.
After looking at various options I decided to have a go at Daab's mash tun for two reasons 1. I like the idea of being able to use large quantities of grain. 2. I am a tight Yorkshire git and I already had all the parts
so here it is in all its glory

and the false bottom

"She" has the lid put on and gets wrapped in 4 peices of plastic coated rockwool tank lagging and then has an old travel rug thrown over the lot.
I used "her" today to brew a light ale the mash started at 67C and 75 minutes later the mash was 66C.
The run off was dreamlike no sign of a stuck mash.
So I would like to say, you may call yourself Daft as a Brush but your ideas are genius :boff:
Thank you

Nice! Is that green hose ok for being in contact with the wort though ? Some hoses have a nasty rubber lining which stinks...

Daab you're welcome :)
Andy, thanks for the concern but the hose is fine I use it on my immersion wort chiller which doubles as a condensing coil on my wall paper stripper based distilling machine 8-[

Tubby are you going to share your water distiller plans?

The lengths people will go to for distilled WATER eh!
I've spotted O's secret weapon of mass inebriation :D

With a reversed flow that distilled water could become a very effective flame thrower....for when the invasion begins :D

Yes can do Orfy,
It's a little bit embarrasing but it works
It's definately Heath Robinson.
Take one Earlex steamer,
attach hose end of immersion cooling coil to steamer outlet, place outlet of cooling coil over collection vessel, wrap condenser coil in old towels and wet them with cold water, turn on steamer, hey presto stuff drips out of condenser coil.
If you were distiling anything other than water there are some sums to be done and some post processing involving carbon etc.

The lables are just made up in Powerpoint :)
The "55" come from 5 gallons, 5 lb pale malt, 5oz wheat malt, 5oz crystal malt, 5oz flaked maize, 5oz flaked barley, 5oz demerera sugar and 5oz white sugar. "55" Light Ale

Printed onto bog standard paper and glued on or did you use stickly label printer sheet ?

Coloured paper, black ink and water based glue, gloy in fact. Nothing fancy.
I always lable 7 bottles and stick one lable in my brewing log.
If I have anybody round I will produce a labled bottle which always seems to impress  and then move on to the unlabled ones.
