Mashtun capacity for 10 gallon brew?

Post by DC » Mon Jun 15, 2009 12:26 pm

Hi all, Just wondering if some one can tell me what would be the minimum capacity of a mashtun required to make a 10 gallon brew? Just recently done a 5 gallon brew in my 28 litre thermos mashtun and I am now thinking why not do a 10 gallon batch instead of just 5 gallons ! double the beer, same length of brew day  So what size mashtun would I need :?:

I've got a 38L mashtun, and I can just about do 10G brews at 5.5%....

If you want to go stronger, you'll need more grain and water - so more space!

I've got a 51L cooler and have only had issues while trying to get over 9%. Generally anything over 15kg of grain is off limits.

It is possible to do a 10G brew in the Thermos with an OG of around 1.040 - 1.045 but you will definitely have to fly sparge it or botch a batch sparge method somehow. When I do 10G brews with mine I just mash in twice and boil it all as one. It adds another couple of hours work but at least I get double the beer.
