New homemade boiler and cooler (lots of pics)
Hi all!
First a big thanks to everyone on the forum especially those on the following topics who have helped as massively in getting this kit altogether
viewtopic.php?f=6&t=22152&start=0&st=0& ... ade+boiler
viewtopic.php?f=6&t=20718&start=0&st=0& ... hunderbird
viewtopic.php?f=6&t=23152&start=0&st=0& ... t=strainer
viewtopic.php?f=6&t=19876&start=0&st=0& ... +immersion
viewtopic.php?f=6&t=21380&start=0&st=0& ... it=chiller
So here it all is, boiler based on a 30l mango chutney tub from ebay with two heaters and hop strainer; and the double coil immersion chiller......
the 30l mango chutney, now with a few holes (2x 40mm, 1x 20mm)
Majority of the plumbing kit for the boiler. I ended up swapping those jubilee clips from some stainless ones as they corroded
Complete hop strainer
all the kit fitted
there's the tap
the cooler. consists of two coils, with the smaller one sitting inside the larger one. The water enters through one of the yellow hozelock connectors and splits into two. Half the water flows down one of the coils and the other half flows up the other one. 25m of 8mm copper sitting right there
there we go all ready to go
I'll post the first brew up with this shortly.....

I think Tequilla6 can take claim for that hop strainer (3rd link top of page) - cheers mate!
It's an awesome design. I don't have a raised circular bottom like the Young's buckets, but worked out fine anyhow. It's much easier to make than drilling a million holes in a copper tube, especially when you don't own a drill!!

Re: New homemade boiler and cooler (lots of pics)
If spiders spun copper pipe, I think that is what they'd make!
I'm going to have to make one soon, Its just whether or not to make a double helix?!

Re: New homemade boiler and cooler (lots of pics)
pdtnc - double helix.....do it, you know you want to! I couldnt resist
Although there is one problem I've found ....It's pretty tricky to get the water out.
As a result I wouldn't want to reuse any of the water coming out of it (for rinsing buckets etc) in case i got bugs growing in side. Other than that it's sweet! Cooled the wort down in no time.....perhaps even quicker than a CFC as you don't have to wait for all the wort to syphon through, you just open the boiler tap!

Re: New homemade boiler and cooler (lots of pics)
How many meters of copper are there?
Re: New homemade boiler and cooler (lots of pics)
25 metres! Totally excessive I know, but the minimum Screwfix sold was 25m of 8mm.
The choice was to build two and give one away/sell one or make a totally nutty one with the whole lot .... guess what happened

Re: New homemade boiler and cooler (lots of pics)
It's surprising actually that it's not much at all
if you work out the volume of 25m of 8mm diameter tubing, ie stick pi * (4mm)^2 * 25m into google
you get only 1.25litres...no worries!

Re: New homemade boiler and cooler (lots of pics)
I am now also joining the mango chutney boiler club. It's the next big thing
I dropped into an Indian restaurant round the corner and asked if they got chutney or pickle delivered in these big plastic drums and what do you know, they do and they even had an empty one right there that they were happy to give me. Even a reasonably big place only goes through a drum of chutney every few weeks so I'm going back next month for another!
Of course, be sensible when scrounging stuff from restaurants. Go when they're not busy and they're far more likely to help you out.
The aroma of mango chutney doesn't linger nearly as much as garlic pickle, so if you have the choice ...

Fantastic. They're based in Wrexham and I'm off there this w/e to visit the outlaws. At that price I'll fill the car up with them I think.
Re: New homemade boiler and cooler (lots of pics)
Chap at work wanted some as well so we have 7 winging there way over. They're on ebay at the mo for £1.50 ea plus postage. Worked out at about £4.50 posted per barrel.

These make great boilers. I've done 10 brews in mine now which adds up to a total of 15 hrs continuous boiling! Highly recommended.Mike8578 wrote:Chap at work wanted some as well so we have 7 winging there way over. They're on ebay at the mo for £1.50 ea plus postage.
