3rd Bast**d Hydrometer jar smashed in 6 months
3rd Bast**d Hydrometer jar smashed in 6 months
ARRRGH
washing up some other stuff caught the Hydro Jar (with hydrometer in) that was on the window ledge.
Another eight quid literally down the plug hole!
The plastic ones seem to cloud over after a few uses
How many have you guys broken so far??

None, I still have the same cloudy plastic one I got 14 years ago (and the same glass hydrometer - which must be some sort of record!).
Re: 3rd Bast**d Hydrometer jar smashed in 6 months
I still have the Boots Hydrometers i bought 20 years ago.
Re: 3rd Bast**d Hydrometer jar smashed in 6 months
Yeah... i put a DJ of wine on my glass hydrometer a few weeks ago. I have two in for when i break the next one!!!

I look forward to the 'make your own polycarbonate trial jar' post.
A fine beer may be judged with only one sip, but it's better to be thoroughly sure.
Re: 3rd Bast**d Hydrometer jar smashed in 6 months
... with the amount your spending in hydrometer jars, you might be able to justify getting a refractometer. Though to be honest if you do drop it; it's even more expensive to replace.
Re: 3rd Bast**d Hydrometer jar smashed in 6 months
I've found mine to be pretty accurate when taking readings from the wort (its handy not having to cool the wort), after the yeast is pitched though all bets are off and i revert back to the trusty hydrometer.Chris-x1 wrote:Too inaccurate to be used with wort and fermenting beer to be useful enough for brewing beer.

You can get a polycarbonate hydrometer but they're about £50 plus VAT

Re: 3rd Bast**d Hydrometer jar smashed in 6 months
Have the readings been 'too' low~? i.e. 1.006 but when you taste then you'd say they were around 1.010 most likely? I guess I trusted mine as it was easier than faffing about with a Hydrometer .. but my FG readings do seem lower ....Chris-x1 wrote:I've had some completely fukced up readings off mine, but particularly on the FG, including from bright beer from a brewery.
