large Conical/ferm question

Post by triggertrevor » Thu Oct 22, 2009 9:10 pm

Hi all wante to ask a question about large fermenters and conicals.

Just say for instance if you had a fermenting vessel that held 100ltrs but you only filled it with a 60ltr brew would the dead space above the brew cause and problems to the beer say for instance oxidation.

The reason i ask is i'm thinking of buying a conical fermenter the ones used for bio diesel as there quite cheap but are also quite large in capacity so wondered if i would have any problems if i wanted to do smaller brews in a large vessel.

cheers kev

you would be fine as the fermentation process produces co2, which is heavier than air/o2, in fact it would probably produce so much co2 that all the air would be expelled via the airlock.
