Hi all
Had a problem today with a budget keg. First major problem out of 6 in stock. Woke up this AM to find precious Wherry on the floor!!! Lost a few pints from the bottom of the keg where the weld/join is. Noticed a few days ago that the beer fill line had dropped and the keg wasn't standing on it's feet but bulging at the bottom. Tested the valve and gas escaped. I haven't had this problem before and neither has the level appeared to have dropped. It was kegged at 1010 SG and 3 ozs sugar added - all as before.
Question is was this just a faulty keg or might it happen again? If I do see the pressure building like this again should I release it rather than relying on the valve which obviously couldn't cope with the amount of pressure? Your advice would be appreciated yet again.
Have put the Wherry in another budget keg now. Hopefully it will be OK. I assume that I will have to sling out the faulty keg now unless you bright sparks can come up with any other uses!!!!
Moral of the tale I suppose is always to have a spare keg in stock JIC.
Budget Kegs
Re: Budget Kegs
The pressure release valves on all kegs only work properly for a couple of brews, I allways keep an eye on my kegs and release pressure when needed. As for your keg are you sure the leak was from the welded join and not the tap seal? they can leak from there if there is too much pressure, the best thing to do is fill your keg with water and give it a blast of CO2 then check where it is leaking from, if it is the welded join take it back from where you bought it and demand a replacement.

I had exactly the same problem earlier this year, keg bottom started to pop out so wobbled around all over the place and the weld started seeping - didn't lose much but worrying.Wallingbrook wrote:Had a problem today with a budget keg. Re-kegged and ended up very drinkable. I dropped it back to the HBS I'd bought from and got a replacement.
Since then had no problems with any of the four I'm using. That's despite the pressure release valve on one having at one stage been "enhanced" (i.e. knobbled) by a previous owner using copious amounts of ptfe tape

Re: Budget Kegs
Thanks for your advice all.
Budget keg has been replaced as it was the bottom weld. Can't speak highly enough of http://www.4u2brew.co.uk as they are also sending a voucher to compensate for return postage etc. Considering that it's a manufacturing fault ands not theirs I think that's very fair.
Cheers again.

They obviously understand the Sale Of Goods Act, unlike many retailers.Wallingbrook wrote: Considering that it's a manufacturing fault ands not theirs I think that's very fair.
