fitting a bi-metallic thermom

Post by beer today » Sun Nov 01, 2009 10:44 pm

hi, I am wondering if it's worth buying another digital thermom, I am thinking about the old stylee bi-metallic probe and dial display. If it could be fitted to a mash tun then I guess it would be better than having an electronic one to resist all that steam and water.
If I drilled a hole thru the side of my poly HLT, and mash tun-coolbox, i could leave one in each and not have any problems. Is there a gland or something to seal around the probe and prevent leakage, it might not be up there in the gadget stakes, but surely this has to be the most reliable method ?

cheers

Personally I wouldn't drill any unnecessary holes in HLT's etc.
A digital thermometer with a wandering probe is to my mind ideal.
You just dip it in, take the reading and withdraw the probe.
The electronic bit comes nowhere near the hot liquids.

Just a thought!

I've just drilled / q max cut my hlt for a masmaster gauge and they also do one for a double walled mashtun too!

I found one for sale at http://www.brannan.co.uk/, it's their back-entry dial thermometer at about £18.50 non VAT.

Cheaper if I buy three...

Cheaper still if I get those from Cewal!
