Post by crookedeyeboy » Mon Nov 16, 2009 12:49 pm

Ive got this for my mash tun...

http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/p ... OL+BOX.htm

And im toying with the idea of using this from H&G

http://www.hopandgrape.co.uk/catalog/de ... HA20225648

Does anyone know if it will fit. I think it will as the spec says 29cm wide and the sparge arm is 21.5cm.Im not at home so I cant measure it and I want to order from them today due to getting a brew on this Sat.

Thanks

Have you ordered it yet?
I've got one of these. They come with a plastic T piece that sits on top of the mash tun.
Looks like the one Jim has here http://www.hopandgrape.co.uk/catalog/de ... HA20225648

You will also need this tubing from H & B

http://www.hopandgrape.co.uk/catalog/de ... HA20225648

I tried it with my own tube for a few times before I ordered one. Also these sparge arms are from a West Midlands shop that are cheaper. If you haven't ordered one yet I'll try to find web site.

Whats the advantage of buying the tubing and connector, notice they havent even got a pircture on the H&G website explaining what it is..>!

How is it anywany? easy to use? Efficient?

I wish I had not bought it. If you want to sparge, you can just rig something up with a bit of plastic or copper pipe with holes in. I have seen loads of great examples on this site. This is the route I wish I had gone down. The sparge arm is a bit of a gimick in my opinion. They are probably good in a round mash bin but mine is a normal rectangle cool box. They look good when they are spinning but it's the end product that counts really.

And did it affect the end product?

I'm interested in Fly Sparging, building a fixed spray manifold sounds easier than getting something to spin in a rectangular coolbox.

But what size holes would need to be in the manifold? (I'm thinking Push-fits and plastic water pipe with a red hot needle melted through it lots) :)

I have a Mash Tun and HLT from the states - see this link http://www.brewd00d.com/

These systems have a "sparge manifold" in the top of the Igloo Mash Tun (holes drilled in a static plastic manifold) and although works quite well, tends to be quite difficult to monitor flow etc. This really works like a cross between fly sparging and batch sparging so a "continuous flow" technique.

All is not what it seems however! With this system I was getting an efficiency of around 75% (max) and so switched to batch sparging where my efficiency increased to around 83%.

I now do batch sparging as routine - this is also an hour quicker during my brew day! :D

I think that has made my mind up. My efficiency is about 82% at the mo, so why fix something when it isnt broken...cheers

No affect on end product. I go for fly sparge because I mostly brew 10 gallon and need to fill cool box with grain. Don't think it's big enough for batch sparge.

i have one and it works well, but the others are right, its a lot of money for what it is... another brewery gadget. there are probably much better and cheaper ways to make your own sparging setup, and best of all it would involve my favorite, a trip to B&Q's plumbing aisle! :D
