What about something like this - Easier to convert to a ball valve and it's made of stainless. 8)

Just big enough for 10 gallon brews too, i believe. Costs a bit more but will last a lifetime!

Ooh yes, these were drooled over in a internet, brewing porn session! Unfortunetely the finances are a bit tight and wouldn't run to the cost! :(

On a postive note the ball valve assemble fitted into the coleman without any bother. The hole was already the right size. :D Tomorrow I will photograph the ball valve assembly and then test the whole thing with mash temp' water and monitor the temp drop.
If I had all the money I'd spent on brewing... I'd spend it on brewing!

No drilling or filing, it all just fitted very easily.

Great pictures Horatio, thanks for posting.

I've just aquired one of these coolers too (inspired by this thread) so I'll need to get down to the plumbers merchant for the hardware.

10 gallon brews here we come :=P

Hi Horatio.

Nice job. I'm currently in a quandary as I thought my current Coleman had come to the end of its life as I'd over tightened the lock nuts (after dismantling for cleaning) and sufficiently bent in the inside wall around the hole, such that I can’t get a water tight seal anymore! Now, looking at your idea - you have used a hex nut to effectively strengthen the inside wall by placing it in the cavity, but looking at your pics the hex nut looks a lot larger than the diameter of the hole; so did you just use brute force to push it through the outer blue casing and into the cavity? I have a SS hex nut and again it is quite a bit bigger than the hole in the Coleman, so it would take some force to push through and looking at your pics I can't see any forced entry!!

Also, what are the internal dimensions of the 10 gallon cooler? I have a SS false bottom from BeerBelly and if I decide to buy one of the 10 gallon coolers - I want to make sure this will fit in ok.... I like the idea of this shape as it will provide a deeper grain bed than my current cooler.

Thanks, Gaz.
