Good thermometer

Post by JamesH » Wed Dec 02, 2009 12:49 pm

Hi, I am getting a little frustrated with thermometers breaking on me. OK so I am a pretty clumsy guy. I have smashed two glass ones and since given up on them as I am convinced I will go through more. I bought an electric one on Ebay which went bananas during its first boil (so I had to estimate when the temperature of the wort was low enough for the yeast to be pitched). Then I bought another, slightly more expensive one on Ebay which was fine for one brew but then went bananas.

So, can someone recommend me a reliable, durable electric thermometer? I am happy to go upto £30 for a good one.

Thanks,

James.

Can't help with an electric thermometer I'm afraid as I'm also looking for a decent one. I await others' replies...

However, I've been using a soil thermometer a bit like this one recently:

Mine's not exactly the same, but it's basically an aluminium case/tube that fits around a glass thermometer. It makes it a lot more robust and I feel much happier about crashing it around in pots and things. I still don't think it would survive a drop on the floor, but you can replace the thermometer inside if it does break.

Cheers Dr, they do look a bit more robust. I'll go for that unless anyone can recommend a Rolls Royce electric one.

The HANNA electronic catering temp probes are apparently very good, they often come up on ebay for sale at a lot less than RRP

The SS Analogue Dial Probe thermometers are good too

the electronic ones you have tried already that have gone 'bananas' is probably due to moisture getting into the probe. Drying the probe out in a low temp oven can remedy the issue.

Cheers Fractureman.

This looks the business for £24. Waterproof and solid-looking:

Might pick up one of these to stick to my FV as well:

Will check the refunds but this could be the answer to all my thermometer problems.

I use one of these boys, has been fine for me. I did have a cheaper plastic version of one of these but it conked out. this is way more robust and has a handy clip for fixing it to the top of my boiler/hlt with the probe in the liquid. also has an alarm which is handy too, set it for the temp you want and it beeps like mad when you hit it...

the refund policy is the same as anything you buy mail order
you can return it within 7 days UNUSED for a full Goods refund, postage wont be refunded

and as with all electronic items in the UK all have 1 year grantee, but this does not extend to misuse of the thermometer dropping damage etc etc

But just a note about all Digital thermometers NEVER NEVER LEAVE THEM IN THE BOILERS / MASH TUN'S
you will find the handles with always melt.

Reund policy not really an issue its the sales of good act .If it doesnt do what you want it to ( and you have asked supplier that it will) then you are intitled to a refund, also 1 year is absolute rubbish the law in the uk is max 5 year (cos you cant return an icecream after that lenght of time) the only prob is burden of prof after 1 year but if you know the sales of good act ( any search engine willgive you it) then you have a right to return an item if it doesnt do what it says it will or fails to do what it should after a few years.
and dont accept any thing less
REPEAT NOT 1 YEAR 5 YEARS irrespective of any warrenty or guaranty
it UK law
