Gas Ring

Post by andysmok » Mon Dec 07, 2009 9:33 pm

Hi all, I've just received my 100l SS pot from optic and was originaly going to buy a couple of elements. I am now thinking of going for gas instead, I have seen this which look pretty good http://www.gasproducts.co.uk/acatalog/L ... _Ring.html . I am just wondering if 8.8kw output is enough for 50 to 60 litres of wort!
Also has anyone bought one of these if so how is it. It looks like i can just place my pot straight onto it.
What kind of regulator should i buy with it.
Thanks for any advise!

Foker Large Round Cast Iron Gas Boiling Ring – Very High Output 8.8kW

A high output single solid cast iron burner boiling ring mounted in a painted steel frame.

Just stating what there description says, Kilo watts is the units of power as far as i was aware, You can produce power in a multitude of ways. A good vindaloo will produce around 5KW in your underpants!

Well said sir! In fact the advert has a typo it should read BTU however that is not the issue truly at hand.............. :-k

8.8KW is equal to 30026BTU which is not that powerful of a burner, mine is 55,000BTU and is rather average although acceptable for my needs, its a sight better than trying to boil 5 gallons on the electric cook top. For some reason I have a strange craving for a good curry..................................

8.8Kwh is roughly equal to 30,000 BTU's

That's about the bottom limit for a boil length of 60L+

That's the same size burner I use (8.8kw)and yes it boils 60l no problem.

Chap,

I have one, and its ok but, you would do better if you can get a bullfinch or one of those American Turkey Fryer Rings!

I used mine on a 50 Ltr Keg outside and If I remember 50 mins to heat from cold to Mash in then another 40 from Sparge to Boil and then it was not anything like the boil I get from my Electric.

Gas was not cheap, always worried about running out.

Would love to have got a Jet engine gas burner but found the electric worked better, i always have the gas to fall back on though. :D

My friend has two 8.8kw burners and they give a vigorous rolling boil on a 10 gallon brew producing very clear beers.

I use an 8.8kW burner and because I brew outside, in cold and windy conditions, unshielded, it used to take ages to bring 60L to the boil. I now use a heat shroud made from an oil drum, not pretty but very effective. I brewed on Friday, albeit quite a mild winter day, and it took exactly half an hour to raise 60 litres from 65oC to vigourous boil (I finally remembered to time it)!

I use propane with a 50mbar regulator, which is higher than the rating for the burner, but I guess these ratings are a little conservative.
A fine beer may be judged with only one sip, but it's better to be thoroughly sure.
