Drill bit made a right mess - please help

Post by floydmeddler » Sat Jan 23, 2010 4:05 pm

Please help!!!

Used a spade drill bit (after witnessing my friend do it successfully) to make a hole on my boiler and this is what happened

Image

Is there any way I can securely block up this hole? far too big for an element as is.

What a nightmare. Wish I left the damn thing as it was.

Any help / suggestions whatsoever will be really appreciated.

Cheers

oops!!!
I blanked an unwanted hole off with a Brass Flanged Back Nut and a Brass Flanged Plug, but I'm not sure if they come in such large sizes to blank off a element hole!!

What sort of size do you need? biggest i can think of thats easily available is an immersion heater blanking plug, just over 2" ",add a suitale flanged nut and all should be good .

I'd bin it and start again mate. Sorry but you will waste more money trying to bring it back instead of using that cash towards a new one. I used a 40mm holesaw this week to do my holes for my coils in my overback. Kettles were £5 quid cheapos from Tescos. Not rubbing salt in your wounds mate, just leting you know the holesaw size etc.

Floyd how big is the hole ? try the local plumbers they should have a blanking plate as suggested as long as its not over 2" dia,the flat woodworking blade drills are a bit of a buggar use a slow speed, and try and brace the inside of your barrel with a piece of wood to stop the plastic flexing away from the drill bit.
If you have to start again at least you have a vessel to practice on and will be able to build bigger and better, no consolation i know

Where there's a will there's a way!

two square washer plates and a nut and bolt sorted it. :D

Didn't even have to use an O ring or rubber washer. Just tightened it until it could tighten no more. Two elements both working great now... did it properly this time. Slowly does it indeed Pas. :D

Cheers for all your help lads.

You should change your user name to Frankenstein with bolts like that :) Well done that man dont forget to keep checking its tight after each brew, another suggestion would be to perhaps have the head of the bolt inside, file two flats on the end of the bolt thread, then should it start to weep when at boil you could put two spanners on the outside, one on the nut and one over the flats, and give it a nip up.

Cheers Pas. Will give it a go as is in two weeks time and if there are any problems I'll try that. Now for another homebrew to remind me why I put myself through these things in the first place. :=P

Nice one Floyd. Well done. The problem is you are now on the downhill slope, because you've got your first bit of shiny

After attempting to turn my H&G 11gal FV into a boiler, I'm reluctant to chuck it. Do you thing I would get away with doing the same thing and using it as a FV?

Don't see why not. No different than having a tap connected.

Alternatively, you can seal it like I've done and have another go at making the element hole?
