draining straining and sieving equipment.

Hi everyone,

one or two members have expressed an interest in seeing the gear i use for filtering. which was equipment my grandad used years ago, in the 60s and 70s.

hopefully the links to the pictures will work.

if this has worked, what you are looking at is the bottom tier of the system. it is a large stainless steel bowl wich sits directly on to the f.v. note the dipped base (about the size of a saucer) the next bit fits into this.

this pic shows the same steel bowl with the micro filter fitted into it. this is much finer than any sieve i've seen. in fact its so fine you can barely see your hand through the other side. the next piece fits directly on top of this .

this seems to be a home made piece perhaps a hob cover?? anyway it has 2mm holes drilled through it. below the surface there is an 1/2 inch drop before the mesh screen.

next a home fabricated trivet sits over the bowl

and into this is placed a standard steamer pan section with 4mm holes. the wort is poured through the steamer pan and filters through the other bits and enters the f.v with fine clarity.

this pic shows the whole thing sat on the f.v.

so there it is, a particularly efficient draining system. a bit wasted on me at the moment as i only do extract brews, but looking forward to reaping the benefits when i move to all grain.

let me know what you think?

cheers
KJ :D
