New Plastic Boilers what are my options?

Post by escapizm » Tue Feb 09, 2010 2:07 pm

I know these are a rare commodity now but surely there are other options out there (other that the blue garlic tubs  ). H&G say thiers are now too thin. I’m very tempted to buy one of these "Bucket & Lid HDPE!" 3rd down from the top. They’re HDPE and say that there heavy duty. Any comments would be welcomed.

hi,

hop and grape say that the fermenting buckets they sell are to thin for conversion to boilers. however they still have some stock remaining from the previous lot of acceptable strength buckets which they themselves convert to boilers.

in a nutshell you can still order a h and g boiler!! but they are currently waiting for elements to be delivered.

hope this helps! :D

Just called H&G

John only has half dozen heavy duty polypropylene buckets which I can appreciate theres more profit in it for him if he makes them into boilers himself to sell rather that a bucket alone so hes not keen to sell them.

back to drawing board...

it also depends on material i think, the preffered being polypropelene http://www.dynalabcorp.com/technical_in ... pylene.asp vs
HDPE http://www.dynalabcorp.com/technical_in ... hylene.asp worth a call though, ill make that call tommorrow and revert. [-o<

Out of those, wouldn't the 2nd one be a better option (Bucket & Lid Polypropylene) as it's rated for liquids at 100c? Bruheat boilers are made from polypropylene.

Edit: Sorry, not the same capacity is it?

Thanks Trunky think these will do the trick, they are PP or Polypropelene so stable at heat and thick walled. I wont get it now till next weekend but will report on performance.

Hamstead will even put in 2 x 38mm holes for elements and Edit 1 x 20mm hole for 15mm bulkhead adaptor.

UPDATE

Ive taken delivery of a 60 litre 10 gallon Polypropelene HK Plastic boiler. Its just as rigid if not more so than the one i melted originally bought from H&G, wall thickness looks to be about 2.5mm ish.

This will make an admirable boiler :)

Bought from Chris at Hamstead Brewing Centre 0121 358 6800. (thanks chris, friendly guy =D> )

Watch his 20mm hole cutter though... its shrank
