Cornish pasty hop stopper - cheap as chips!
I've seen a few home made hop stoppers around here using expensive stainless mesh.. Here is my bargain basement corruption of the idea. It's not pretty, but neither is the trub it will be covered in, so who cares.
Materials needed:
Cheap stainless seive (3 quid from amazon)
Jubilee clip (pence?)
Long nose pliers (already owned)
Grappling monkey strength (already owned)
Method:
Use pliers in combination with monkey strength to destroy seive:
The horribly scratched kitchen floor is not critical to this process, but feel free to replicate it if you wish.
You now have a useless metal ring and a dish-shaped piece of stainless mesh. Turn your attention to the mesh and flat it out.. it started life as a flat sheet and its very easy to return it to that state.
Fold the mesh in half and use your pliers to roll the edge and crimp it like a Cornish pasty.. remember to leave a bit uncrimped for your collection pipe.
Secure your pasty to the pipe in your boiler with a jubilee clip.
3 quid hop stopper: Done.
Now.. if there's some kind of prize for the worst DIY skills ever exhibited on this forum, I demand it.

Good Job
The Americans don't know what a Cornish pasty is, their version made from a splatter guard is a Hop Taco

That is a thing of, erm, inner beauty. Kinda the Shrek of the brewing world.
I don't really care what my kit looks like as long as it gets the job done. Nice one.

I made one of these a few weeks ago and I have to admit, it's not perfect.
I have found that it typically gets clogged before I've managed to empty the kettle - I'm normally left with a gallon or two in the kettle. Also, as it clogs I've found that the mesh constricts the flow by the jubilee clip which also causes problems.
However, you do get wonderfully clear wort into the fermenter.
The updates I'm going to make are:
1. Use the mesh from two sieves to double the surface area and get more of a "frying pan" shape.
2. Add some copper tubing to make a pickup tube so that the wort is being drawn from right at the bottom of the kettle (but inside the metal mesh). This should prevent the mesh from constricting and also leave less deadspace in the kettle.

Just tried this out for the first time and it worked fantastically.. drained all the way down and kept the wort sparkling to the last drop.
I can't believe I made something that works!
