Large Pots For Brewing

Post by wilfy1970 » Sun May 30, 2010 3:34 pm

I have recently bought two 100L pots to upgrade my brewery. I bought them direct from Bergland Handels GmbH. I paid for the two pots ( 45.9 EUR each ) and delivery ( 17.9 EUR ) 109.70 EUR with the conversion rate of the day 1.1266. = £97.37.

When you consider that some online shops ask for Brupaks stainless steel tanks £163.49 for 50L, £199.25 75L & £229.89 buying direct can make a considerable saving. I bought a 70L pot over a year ago and have used it as my copper many many times and its still going strong.

Anyone interested in buying some contact catering-service-fr.berglandfrance@msg.afterbuy.de . The very helpful English speaking lady I dealt with was called Nadine Strobel.

their thermopots look good for mashtuns..

I do like the sound of the 70l stainless pot jobbie though.

My 70l pot is heated by 2 x 3Kw kettle elements and they heat up a 10G brew no problem. Not sure if these would be man enough for a 100l brew

And yes, thethermopots do make very good mash tuns

The uninsulated ones are originally intended for catering so yes they will be mighty fine on a gas ring.
The insulated ones will not be OK on gas though (because the insulation will melt!).

I use a blichman burner at the moment and use a 70L pot as my copper. I am going to convert the 70L into a mashtun ( insulated ) and one of the 100L into a copper this weekend. For a controlled boil I am going to put 2 X 3KW elements into the copper at some point. The way I see it, as the wort leaves the mashtun it'll be hot and by the time I top up the copper I'll have both elements on and so it should get up to boiling fairly quickly, and then have just one element on for the duration of the boil, although I am hoping one element will be enough. My brother in law is an electrician and so I get him to do the electrical stuff.
I will make the other 100L into a HLT soon.

Immersion elements will be 100% efficient at the point of use (ie. if they draw 3kw then you get 3kw of heat into your wort). The disadvantage is that they are less controllable. With gas you can turn down the burner so that you use just enough to maintain a rolling boil. With electric immersion heaters you can turn off one element and maintain a rolling boil with the other element but this may be more than you need, however, it may not add up up to much at the end of the day.

efficiency vs economy
