Lidl Boiler
Lidl Boiler
Have a look at this offer at Lidl £39.99 on 10th June - it looks very similar to the Brupaks mash boiler at over £100! (but without the strainer)
Re: Lidl Boiler
1800w element will be a bit slow. But a good first boiler if low cost is a priority.
Re: Lidl Boiler
Capacity is a tad low for use as a boiler for 5 gallons. You would have to boil a smaller quatity and top up as the boil went on or top up in the fermenter but it's not insurmountable.
Great price though, and a great bit of kit if you want to try a bit of sous vide cooking!

Re: Lidl Boiler
just seen these in lidl today and was thinking along the same lines - anyone tried one yet - for that price may even be worth buying to modify - ie replacing the element with something a little stronger.
as for the capacity - what sort of quantity would you expect to boil in there and how does topping up as you go along affect things?
what is the metal liner made of too??
cheers

Re: Lidl Boiler
Ddn't see this thread, and I posted a link in Bargain basement to the same thing Sorry for the double post.
We bought one at my work for some work with heated sea water and We've had it up and running to about 50C on a full tank (25L).
Despite the size of the heater element, it does heat up pretty quick, perhaps not up to the standard of a pro boiler. I'll time it tomorrow to a boil at 25L and see what it is like.
The temperature controller on it is a bit guff. I set it to 30C and it went to 50C, YMMV.
This is more or less identical to the Brupak one. The only differenec is it doesn't have the hop strainer and it has a single cast base. There is no liner. It is a solid steel tank that is coated in enamel.
It says it is 27L, but that is not at max capacity. When filling the tank it says to leave a 4cm gap from the top, and this will give you 27L. If you filled it more you would get more in.
One thing that isn't imediately obvious is that it is quite 'squat' the dimensions are 36cm diameter and 28cm depth.

Re: Lidl Boiler
If its the same as my Brupaks enamel one then theyre very good. I get a good 29lts to the brim in it and it never boils over. Takes about half an hour to get 50C wort up to 98C. For £40 its definately worth it as the Brupaks one is about £150!
Re: Lidl Boiler
So it definitely maintains a boil then?
It's not like the Burco boilers where it cuts out after boiling for a bit?
If so, I'll be stopping off at Lidl tonight!

Re: Lidl Boiler
Oh yeah it boils fine, in fact it does a perfect rolling boil, you just whack it on full to get it going and then turn it back a bit to give you a nice gentle rolling boil.
Re: Lidl Boiler
If anyone's interested in one of these, there's a voucher for £5 off £30 spend at Lidl in today's Daily Mirror - valid today and tomorrow.
Not seen it myself, but I understand the voucher is on page 18.

Re: Lidl Boiler
Was going to get one of these for a HLT, just checked the Northern ireland LIDL website, no sign of the boiler
damn blast and double damn

Re: Lidl Boiler
Forgive my ignorance.... I'm in an excited stupor at the moment... but with two of these, we have a Mash tun AND a boiler... right??
Re: Lidl Boiler
Agreed, you can bodge a mash tun together easily enough out of a cheap picnic cooler, you could have a hlt, mash tun and boiler for about 100 quid give or take few quid.crookedeyeboy wrote:Hmmmm it would be better as a boiler and a HLT....
