CO2 Regulator not connecting to CO2 gas cylinder! *fixed*

Post by newelley » Fri Mar 25, 2011 11:50 am

Hi there,

The cylinder (~.5 kg) I purchased with my corny keg has finally run out, and I managed to source a new pub gas cylinder (6.35KG) from a local aquarium suppliers. I disconnected the regulator from the smaller grey bottle and reattached firmly to the larger bottle. Everything seemed firmly connected, so I turned on the tap on top of the cylinder, and I heard hissing gas coming from the seal between the cylinder thread and the regulator nut.

the regulator I have is pictured here.

Here is a picture of the empty cylinder regulator connection for comparison

the full cylinder connection is here...

Are all regulators made equal? Am I missing something obvious ?
I can take more pictures if needed.

Thanks in advance for any help given :-)

I think I've sorted it,

I added a 1/2" fibre washer to the washer already included on the reg, and it has now sealed and is gassing my kegs.

Cheers all

Hi Trunky

As far as I can see, the most recent date on the actual cylinder is 2007, is this a reasonable testing date?

Thanks for your input

High pressure cylinders such as these require 10 hydraulic test, part of this test requires replacement of the outlet valve, so the last stamped date on the cylinder should, more or less, correspond to the date on the valve, a valve marked 1987 is well out of date.

Ok, that might suggest some of the problems I experienced then. The cylinder was supplied by Highlight Horticulture in Arnold, Nottingham, who in turn, were supplied by Jackson Keay (I only know of these two suppliers in Nottingham). Is it worth speaking to either of these guys to get a replacement? I'm guessing I don't have much of a leg to stand on, as I dont have a reciept from Highlight. :-(

dunno about replacement, although I'm sure someones breaking the law, somewhere down the line, it would probably be best if you could find someone to refill your 2008 cylinder.

if you've got an in date cylinder ( a reputable co wont re fill an out of date unit) then a fire extinguisher co is probably cheapest as they fill a lot at one go, I'll send you a message.

Hi Trunky,

Thank-you for taking the time to reply.
I'm thinking along the lines of swapping it out now. Not worth the risk when I can pay £13 for a refill, and this time ensure I walk out with a properly tested cylinder. Talk about learning from your mistakes eh? I'll post here to let everyone know how I get on.

Just been to Highlight today and got a 2015 cylinder. They didn't offer a receipt initially, but would have exchanged the bottle I took away without one.
