CORNIE HOP DEPTH CHARGE / BOMB

Post by GARYSMIFF » Fri Apr 29, 2011 9:20 pm

People,
I wanted to Dry Hop a brew in a Cornie any good Ideas to do this,

I thought of getting a drinks can ie: Cola can and stuffing it with hops then plugging it with a Copper mesh Scourer then using a Map Pin/ drawing pin and pricking the life out of the can then wet the Hops with beer or just drop it in.

any other Ideas, better or worse don't mind let us know :D

I use a tea ball with good effect. Look out for ones made of Stainless steel.

as it happens just found an A4 sheet of 1mm perferated Stainless steel, I might make my own as i want to put more than a tea bags worth but thanks BM.

Still intrested in other peoples Ideas
What if I just make a Hop filter from the perferated sheet and wrap it round the Out tube on the Cornie and dry hop as normal, I just thought that the hop goodness would be close to the output if the hop bomb sunk to the bottom.

I wonder if something could be made to shove on the pick-up pipe, with a regular Cask-Tap Hop Filter, then you could dry hop freely with almost any amount.

In the past I have used hop socks with marbles in. But I also find just hops added loose is just as good. I haven't had any problems with serving.

What about one of these on the end of your dip tube:

I designed this to attach to the end of a racking tube to filter out the dry hops in the FV or secondary when transferring to the keg. It fits onto the same size tube as the dip tube in the corny. The only draw back is that the fitting in the stainless tea ball is a standard 10mm plastic cable gland nut so I've no idea if it's food safe. Not a problem for my intended use, but I don't know if it can be left in a corny without affecting the beer.
Having said all that, you can buy brass ones.

I was looking around in a box of plumbing Stuff yesterday and noticed that some washing machine feed pipes have a small filter but the Tea ball is a great Idea, might even add to Copper and Mash inlets and Stop using coppers scourers.

keep the trains of thought running we might get more serendipitous answers to problems :)

Beermonsta, sorry if what Jubby pics show is what you suggested, I took it as to put the hops in the Ball, that said have seen large balls  tea balls that is.

Looks like you seriously F'cked up a Thermos flask!
I bought a couple of those BBQ sheets for a False bottom idea that I never did, I think I recall someone on here saying they corroded though I think that was in a Hot wort situation.

I also read that after suggesting the sheet as a use for a false bottom but there is only one way to find out so I shall drop it in and findout when the kegs empty which I am sure will be only a few weeks time...lol

Its in and ½ hour later getting the dry hop taste in the beer as its sitting next to the exit :)

Funny never was one to dry hop beer but I think it might be the "PHUTURE" of my summer brews.
