New kegerator build

Post by JabbA » Tue May 08, 2012 12:10 pm

I've been using 2 freecycled under counter fridges in my shed for a couple of years, one for fermenting and one for conditioning / serving via a cobra tap and beer engine. One thing I've noticed is that the beer in the Armaflex laggd beer line (going out of the keg to the cobra tap) goes off overnight meaning that I have to chuck the best part of 1/3rd of a pint on the veg patch each day I pull a pint :x

My boss's 1400mm high integrated fridge at home was only cooling intermittently so I brought it home and had a poke about to see if i could replace the serving fridge with a full blown kegerator 8), hopefully with all the beer line in the fridge there'll be no spoilage [-o<

For a start I could squeeze 4 cornies stacked 2 high and hopefully I'll be able to fit the gas in there too next to the compressor housing \:D/

I programmed my Arduino HERMS box as a min/max themp logger and hooked up my TC-10 to to see how it worked. I found the compressor only turned on when in 'supercool' mode which only works for a few minutes.

After bypassing the thermostat the TC-10 controlled it down to 2° for 10 minutes or so which was good enough for me :D

Image

After a good clean, looking at the fridge's control panel it looked like TC-10 might fit with the existing circuit board removed, so I got the jigsaw out and hacked out a hole in the control panel. After a bit of chiseling and filing in it went :D

Image

Next I transferred the tube heater from the existing fridge and wired that into the TC-10.

Image

That's about all I had time for yesterday, bar marking out the position of the tap holes; I've two Dalex flow control taps and need to get a couple more. Nice bling German taps would be nice but that would blow the budget that currently stands at £nil

Image

Next on the agenda, after fitting the taps, is to devise a way to display how much is left in each keg. Buoyed by the success of my Arduino HERMS set-up I've been investigating how I could use an Arduino for the task. There are a few people who have hacked bathroom scales successfully to weigh a keg and work out how much beer is left, but with kegs stacked 2 high that wouldn't work.

Sparkfun have a Tweeting kegerator that uses reed a switch to detect if the handle is pulled. I'm thinking that I could do something similar and attach a tilt switch to each tap and time how long it takes to pull a pint, I could then program the Arduino to work out how much is left based on how long the handle has been pulled. I would have to make sure that the CO2 pressure is kept constant and the length of beer line is the same to each keg to ensure that each pint takes the same amount of time to pour. I'd also have to make sure the kegs start off with the same amount of beer in them, or devise a way to input the volume of the keg before it's 'taped'.

That's all for now folks, stay tuned for further updates :D

Cheers,
Jamie

Looking good, one of the many things I eventually want to build ;)

Looking at your all your great build posts Barneey, I'm surprised you have any time to brew

That reminds me, I must get round to cladding my posts in oak... :D

Jamie

Nice job!

If its of interest, I happened across an ebayer selling a flow meters and and stock-control systems a while ago here. I haven't investigated any further (my wish list is already far too long), but the method could be useful if weighing the kegs is awkward. Not really sure how well they'd work with carbonated beer and very slow dispense rates, but presumably he's tested them.

Building things IMHO is easier than brewing, the therory goes I can snatch an hour here or there to make things, if they dont get finished, not a problem. Cant really leave a brewing day halfway though and start again next week :) #-o

Anyway back to the kegerator build my thoughts were to make one similar to your build, but to have a moveable keg (timber clad) jacket so that it can sit in the living room when required.

As for a flow meter arrangement, I like the look of the ones as mentioned in Kevs post above, but lack of building funds at the moment = no new equipment untill I sell something from the spares cupboard.

Another brewday is planned soon I hope, if I can squeeze 3 kegs on one day I`ll be happy.

I look forward to your "flow" build 8)

Thanks for the link Kev, I did have a quick look into flow meters and the ones I cam across where very expensive, they look just the job! I'll have a go with tilt switches first as I can get them for less than a couple of quid each, and see how I get on!

I see where you're coming from there Barneey! I've had thoughts about having a portable keg cooler built for parties etc. My dad works with glass fiber and I'm thinking of a GF column into which goes a keg with water / ice around it but have not thought about active cooling.

Jamie

A bit more progress tonight, after cutting holes for the taps I moved my fermenting fridge and re-routed some electrics before fitting the two Dalex flow controll taps I already have (I've just won another on E-bay) and installed the kegerator in the shed.

Image

Hole saw jumped around a bit! The steel door is rigid enough without reinforcing it, which is nice!
Image

Four kegs fit, but there's no room for a gas bottle unfortunately.
Image

And finally: covering the holes before sorting out the gas and beer lines tomorrow.

Looks quite good, i'm trying to get my hands on a "spare" fridge for my yeasties to live in while they eat the wort.
Looking very nice though i must say!
Im actually in the process of making a 5l keg cooler from a mini fridge, that fits one keg, and cools it down to a safe drinking temperature :). Half way through and it is an ugly beasty, when i get more materials i'll finish it and see exactly how good it is before looking into high powered heatsinks and eventually scaling it up. My thoughts are that it would need the cooling plate at the top in a semi-circular fashion snugly fitting the keg so its literally cooling the smallest possible space. Switch out the age old crap pc fan and replace with a high powered thing like the one that stops my pc from melting when its overclocked.

I've been very lucky with Freecylce in the past, I've had 3 under-counter fridges and a wine cooler which I've made into fermenting chambers / mini kegerators.

Good luck with your keg cooler, sounds like a nice project!

Jamie

I can see why you wanted a flow measure meter, not enough room in there for the "lifty - sploshy" - full, 3/4 , 1/2, 1/4 oh dear, guess the weight method. ;)

Cheers Andy!

I get the mag now and again, that was a race board from SITS a few years ago! BTW it was Singletrackworld where I first heard about Jim's!

I hate that dreaded unexpected "hiss-splosh-gurggle-ness" once the last drop has been pulled! Measuring the number of pulls / flow will at least give a bit of warning!

Jamie
