New Fermenting Fridge Build - with Pics!

Post by JonoT » Sun May 13, 2012 9:17 am

Having now brewed a number of beers, thought it was time to get a Fermenting Fridge!

I managed to pick up of fleebay for a tenner a tall larder fridge and set to yesterday carrying out a few modifications! My plan is to be able to fit in 2 x 30L FV's as i often do a double brew day.

New Fridge (with broken handle and some dents!)

Rather disappointingly it has glass shelves and there is no chance that will hold a full 30L FV

So for a bit of woodwork and a some new shelves. The shelves are free standing and can be removed if needed, however after building them inside the fridge, I needed to take the door off to get them out!

I have got a 60w bar heater also from fleebay for £12 as the heat source, this is mounted to the shelf supports so to save needing to drill and fix to the fridge!

There was also a rather convenient drain hole in the back of the fridge. I have used this to take the cables though.

A ATC-800 controller finishes the whole thing off

I think I will also need to fit some sort of fan also to keep the temperature even.

I now just need a brew day to test it all out!

That is almost identical to my Beko brewfridge. Very good find for £10.
The glass shelves are surprisingly robust and hold 25l without issue but your frame is better long term.
I have found a couple of small 240v case fans which I might try to see if it makes any difference.

Looks great, proper bargain and good work on the timber support frame.

I have a larder fridge like this, have lager fv in at moment. I ran my cable through that hole at first but it froze up the back wall of fridge as condensation had nowhere to drain.

I've done a similar build and find I don't need a fan

I had not thought about that being an issue. I will keep a close eye on it and check it regally. I guess that only time will tell.

Used my fridge for this 1st time this week.

Brewed on Monday evening and put it into the fridge to ferment had have had by best ever fermentation, It had reached 1008 by yesterday morning so a full fermentation in under 4 days! Until i got the fridge I've been struggling to get under 1014.

I am so glad i got a fridge! Would recommend everyone gets one!
