Alternative 3kw Pigtail Element and Slimline Locknut

Post by Brighteyebeer » Fri Apr 26, 2013 5:59 pm

I wondered if this might be of interest? I'm planning to up my brewlength in the not too distant, but wanted more power in my HLT to cope with the greater volume. I've read threads in which posters sang the praises of 3kw pigtail elements, mainly this one:

http://www.heatingelementcompany.co.uk/ ... roduct=231

Advantages being mainly 2 small holes to make in HLT or boiler (instead of 1 large one a la kettle element).
Disadvantages that I could see were i) eye-watering cost; ii) need to fit a project box outside to protect the wiring connections, and iii) problem with earthing.

Meandering about online (as one does!), I came across these:
http://www.unifit.co.uk/products/80011/ ... -universal
http://www.conrad-uk.com/ce/en/product/ ... .ASTPCEN22

I took the plunge and ordered both, the last item to arrive being the element, which came today (fiver delivery charge). Unfortunately (?) I had my HLT in use for a brewday. On finishing, I replaced my (plastic) HLT's element with the pigtail, locknut, and its original shroud. Here's a pic:

Image

I've not had time to test beyond cold water (which isn't leaking :) ) That's no bad thing, as the locknut's only finger tight (don't have a big enough spanner :( ) I swapped-out the heavy duty washer (about 3mm wide) that came with the pigtail for a standard element washer to ensure the shroud fitted

Strikes me that these would be suitable for a boiler or HLT. I'm sure shiny boilers etc will have thinner walls than my plastic HLT, so the locknut can get a good grip and still leave enough thread for the shroud. Still needs a big hole making, but earthing and protecting the connections from spills etc is sorted :D Now, where's my screwdriver and spare plugs?...
Cheers, Chris

Brilliant solution to a problem of secure element fixing. One I shall remember when building my next boiler/HLT.

Nice work!

Personally I went for a bog standard 3kw immersion element in my plastic HLT. For under £15 delivered and easy to fit I didn't need much convincing :)

Hi
I posted the info in the hope it might be useful to others, Chastuck. Good luck with your next build!
Andy - I rejected immersion elements, being neither engineer nor electrician. Didn't fancy the 64mm hole cutting and by-passing the thermostat. My ears pricked-up when I first came across mention of pigtails, but £65 + delivery? Oww! I also wanted to trial it in my present HLT, which already had a kettle element hole.
I couldn't resist wiring a plug and trying it. Compared to the 2kw Backer element it replaced, it's 50% more powerful on paper. I just found out it is QUICK! Has 50% more power but seems twice as fast :D Well pleased!
Cheers, Chris

I got that one first linked, but for a bargain of £24 from a site I cant remember. Only used it once but was very happy with the boil time.

Hi Highlander
The element has a dull metal finish, so I'd guess it's iron or mild steel.

Cazamodo - pity you can't find the website. Search again!!

Iron or mild steel? Won't that rust out pretty quickly?

Hi Belter
I expect it will rust pretty quickly. I hope that, as the makers have produced it for food use, they've factored-in a coating of rust. I will email the suppliers and query this.
The element it replaced had rusted - I think the CRS in an HLT is too aggressive for their coatings. At least there's no nickel coating on the pigtail element for the CRS to dissolve!

I'm only just getting to grips with water treatment. Shouldn't you add your water treatment to your mash to avoid this? Can't be avoided for BIAB I suppose?

I want to avoid any chemicals in my HLT so I don't have to clean it with anything serious.

Hi Belter
I add minerals to the mash - gypsum etc - but CRS has to go in the water to get rid of the carbonates. Quite hard water here - I'm using 0.8 ml of CRS per litre :(

Maybe I exaggerated as I cant find the same one at that price!

There is this one on Ebay

http://compare.ebay.co.uk/like/20089129 ... =64&ff19=0

And I think this is the one I ordered. However I'm sure it came to under £30... But the website digispot definitely rings a bell

A dull grey element would suggest it's made from incoloy to me, which is a high quality, fit for purpose element. It can't be steel or iron, there would be safety issues.
A fine beer may be judged with only one sip, but it's better to be thoroughly sure.

Good call on that ebay link, I had it bookmarked but last time I looked they were out of stock, I already had one of these elements but wanted another. :)
