March Pump from UK

Post by Supercooper » Fri Nov 01, 2013 6:54 pm

Having asked March UK for a price on an 809 with polysulfone head, March UK have offered me the SS4R. Problem is, its only rated to 93 degrees C. When I asked if i could run the pump for 30 mins at 100 degrees, this was the response:-

Your correct, the 93°c rating is applicable to the SS4R – this isn’t because of the Ryton (which is food grade by the way) it’s because of the drive magnet.

Ryton is capable of taking very high temperatures, the magnet however is only good at just under 100°c. If you were only running it for a few minutes at a time, then it would have been fine, however – for 30 minutes, it is likely to expand and crack.

To get around this, we would look to encapsulate the magnet in Ryton or stainless steel. The pump for this would be the TE-MDX-MT3 as attached; The temperatures you are looking to pump the hot wort, mean that you will have to consider either the Ryton with encapsulated magnet as mentioned, or a stainless steel pump (which puts the cost up by another 0 at the end) the T-MDX-MT3 would be supplied with a ½” NPT inlet and discharge – ½” NPT will connect directly to BSP as both have 14 threads/inch.

1 No TE-MDR-MT3 Magnetic Drive Single stage Centrifugal Pump, 230v 50Hz IP55 Motor £250.00 Carriage £15.00

I think this is over the top, for a 50l brew length. Any thoughts from March May users? I think the 809 would be better and cheaper??? Thanks for any help with this. I'm currently setting up a new mag pump from MrLard, which looks like another promising alternative. More on that when its installed (replacing a solar pump)

Is there a reason you're going mag drive? £250 for a pump is overkill. Nothing wrong with a shaft driven pump for most applications (or any).

I bought a chinese solar pump a little while a go and it is significantly better than the official Solarpump I bought. It is so good I bought another for my next project :D

I think the SoLard pump will be ideal for your setup. I haven't tested one but intend to at some point. Be interested to know how you get on.

Did you not see the Chugger pump thread? I was close to buying one. A lot cheaper than £250

Yeah, I know. I saw the thread. But wasn't ready to make a decision. I'm still not.
I am going to set up the mr lard mag pump today. Watch this space

You can get a march 809 delivered from the USA for £125... even if your stung with duty your going to save £100 + ....tried and tested and durable if you don't drench it....

I'm using 2 of those 809-PL-HS March pumps with polysulphone / RytonPPS / Silicon / StSt / cw 1/2 in line male ports. They are brilliant. Honestly you will never look back. I do use them up to 78 no probs and I use them to pump boiling wort over my intercooler. I never realised I wasn't supposed to do this till you posted it lol. But I have had no problems in 3 years of use. The wort must be over 100 when I first pump (but cools pretty rapidly). My setup is 40 litres. They are pricey, but I think they will last forever. I've stuck a video of mine on youtube if you ever want to see it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iOPzdtZFUC0 By the way, the truly great thing with these pumps is the ability to throttle back, stop, open whatever you want with the pump fully running. That's one of the main reasons I bought them. Sub
Edit - I checked my paperwork from MarchMay. The 809-PL-Hs I bought is rated to 121c. Cost me £131 each in 2010. I would say that it is the Rolls Royce of pumps. I bought 2 when I was feeling flush, years later I'm really glad I did. Shaft driven is ok, but prone to leakage on the seals and not food safe. I have a restaurant license here and cannot use anything non food rated. That said I have nothing against them, having seen Darkonnis post on that pump I am really tempted to buy one. I am sure I can find a use for it!

You can buy one of these for £2 more http://www.onlinepumps.co.uk/ebara-cdx-70/07.html the reason they will not sell the 809-PL-HS March pumps here is because they are not CE approved waiting on four solar pumps to arrive at £13 each delivered its a "no brainer"

I think a march pump is looking a bit too pricey for me. I bought a mag drive pump off Mr Lard on here a few weeks ago, and I managed to finally put it into action on my brewery after a strip down and re-build. ( a couple of faulty pt100's prompted me to strip it all down, plus I just bought a counter fridge to sit everything on)
I have to say it worked like a dream. It recirculated my mash for 90 mins with no problem, and there was a noticeable difference in the speed of temperature change as it sucked the wort through the mash. Compared to the solar, it's a wonderfully impressive beast.
It also recirculated the boiling wort for 15 mins, and then sat at 80 deg for the steep for 20mins.
It's noisier when running fully open, but throttled back to 50% it's almost whisper quiet.
I'll be buying another when the other solar pump packs up, which seems inevitable if the last two are anything to go by.

March May are unable to sell the American pumps into Europe because they don't have a CE Mark. The SS4R is a good option for anything under 95°c and for above 95°c the ESS4R. both around £150
