Meet the Hop SpRoCket, not a Spider nor a Rocket, or a sock

Post by VANDEEN » Fri Feb 26, 2016 9:15 pm

As a break from building the VANDEEN BREWMISER & control panel I looked about at various methods of controlling your hops.

The spiders looked good but not shiny, the rockets liked nice but pricey, and the socks were cheap but allegedly compromise hop utilisation because of restriction...

A quick trip round Ikea brought the solution, meet the hop SpRoCket.

Number of socks can obviously be varied to increase/decrease filtration.

Most of the homebrew shops sell them about 60p depending on where you go. Really handy for steeping grain too :-)

I made these a little while ago, mainly as I wanted a looser mesh for a hop spider & there wasn't / isn't a large commercially available product.
Hair of the dog, bacon, butty.
Hops, cider pips & hello.

2 questions

Can they sit on the bottom of the pan. And do they have to go all the way up the pan or just above the liquid level

should be a fairly simple job to cut some SS mesh into a disk to sit on the base and a rectangle to roll up and line the inner wall with, the 'wall' would hold a slightly oversized base disk in place and a couple of bands of springy stainless steel could be employed to secure the wall roll in place.

The only downside of using cut mesh pieces is the cut edges, Very sharp!! i have considered edging with sugru or the diy 2 part foodsafe silicone sold for making diy chocolate moulds..

http://www.makeyourownmolds.com/silicone-plastique

or if you can source some silicone edging even better ;)
ist update for months n months..
Fermnting: not a lot..
Conditioning: nowt
Maturing: Challenger smash, and a kit lager
Drinking: dry one minikeg left in the store
Coming Soon Lots planned for the near future nowt for the immediate :(

I pickup up a couple of these too as a cheap source of a quite fine mesh, may need 3 to line the pot though depending on height.

Gary
They are called Stainless knife holders,I used one of these late last year but suspended it from copper tubing and dropped in socks full of pellets which as you say did not completely break up.
Love the external bag and will try again maybe with your external muslin or maybe cutting some mesh to line the inside of the pot. maybe insert a couple stainless nuts and bolts through the holes at the join to secure the mesh roll in place. if I rig one up I will post the pic.

PS Did you fix the two holders together or are they just loose one on top of the other inside the hop bag?

OK got 2 of the larger size today.
How did you connect them together or is it just friction fit?
