Anyone Tried This as a Hop Spider/Dry Hopper?

Post by AdrianTrace » Wed Nov 23, 2016 8:55 pm

I decided to order the "standard" dry hopper for containing pellet hops (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/7-29cm-Homebr ... Sw44BYJBol) as my voile bags are wearing out.

Looking through their other items, I spotted this (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rotisserie-Gr ... SwA3dYErG2), which looked perfect for leaf hops, so I bought it as well, and will report back when I test it (it's in transit, so it may be next year before it gets used in anger. Has anyone tried this item for brewing?

It may work as a hop spider for leaf hops too. I bought one of the cheap "flat pack" hop spiders from China, but it doesn't fit in my boiler with my chiller, which is no good for late/flame out additions. This could be slung across the boiler over the element where it doesn't block the IC from going in :-k .

Apart from in the title of the item... :D

The first thing both items will get is a good clean, which should show up such issues... Hopefully

Well, it's had its first use for dry hopping - I'll give it 8/10.

Good: Easily held 60g of leaf hops (would comfortably take 100g), sank nicely to the bottom, still just as shiny when it came out.
Bad: powdery bits of hop escaped (not much, though) and a bit of an arse to clean under the tap, but blasting it (thumb over the hose) worked fine.

I'll definitely use it again for leaf hops.
