Yeast upstand

Post by Hubstersbrewery » Fri Jan 20, 2017 9:15 am

Hi I have just purchased a Grundy tank to use as a fermenter and it came with a yeast upstand, no idea what this is for or how to use it.

Any ideas? Or am I missing something really obvious?

when you have a post count of 5+ you can add pictures from sites like photobucket, flickr, or your chosen cloud server.

google tells me this is a yeast upstand:

?? is that what you have/mean?
And beyond it being used in brewery sized yeast propogation I have no clue as to what particular use its put.

I could hazard a guess that it could be used to scoop out a sample of yeast from a specific depth in a tank??? but its just a guess ;)

You certainly wont need it to ferment brews in your new tank.

perhaps someone more enlightening can help :)

It goes on the inside of the outlet to prevent yeast being drawn of on racking

Yes that's what I have in the photo, I'm hoping to move on from my 100 litre setup to something bigger that can be commercially viable so have been buying bits along the way.

We building it at Clayton Brook near Preston.

I think we have about a months work remaining before we start brewing.

Most of the equipment came from Best Mates Brewery / Fisher & Co Brewery down in Oxford.
