Blanking Cap for Plastic Barrel

Post by k1100t » Thu Mar 16, 2017 1:40 pm

I use these plastic barrels for conditioning beer and cider:

The taps get very manky overtime, especially with the cider. So I'd like to replace them with some sort of blanking cap. As the threads go in, I can't put a cap like the ones on the Speidel fermentors:

I was thinking on buying some screwed hexagon blanking plugs from BES, but don't know what kind of thread these barrels use. Can anyone tell me if they're BSP and if so, what size of blanking plug I would need? Has anyone done this before, or does everyone just use those no-chill jerry cans for conditioning...?

Thanks,

Bob.

iirc floydmedler or a member with a similar handle has made jerrykegs, tapped jerrycans or no-chill cubes which can hold a limited condition in the beer similar to polypins ??

And some folk have modded PB's to fit dalex style taps and have used a 3/4"bsb to 1/2" bsp reducing bush to accommodate this, SO if i remember correctly a 3/4" blaking plug may be suitable, check the thread with the table found in the wiki on bsp threads.

Replacement taps are cheaply obtainable from many homebrew shops. Also they can be stripped by pouring boiling water over the outer and then pushing out the spout for a deeper clean.
Without patience, life becomes difficult and the sooner it's finished, the better.

I don't have a set of calipers for measuring, and nothing bigger than ¾" with which to try. Will give one of those a go this evening, although I thought the hole would be bigger...

Cheers,

Bob.
