Is this a terrible idea? Rotary Spray Ball edition

Post by Norik » Fri Jun 16, 2017 4:24 am

I do BIAB, so I don't really care about a good grain bed, and I stir it up every few minutes during the mash anyway.
I also recirculate during my mash to try and keep everything stirred up, and to keep the heat even.

To that effect I've just ordered a Rotary Spray Ball off of ebay, which I'm thinking of hanging through the lid of my kettle, and submerging in the mash, to get a constant stirring.

Apart from the obvious risk of painting the walls and ceiling with mash water (which i hope to avoid), why is this a stupid idea.

as its a clean in place item its spray former may be restricted requiering some liquor filtering to avoid clogging up?

do you think your liquor flow is going to be fast enough to spin the head and spray? a capped length of perforated copper tube shoved into your grain mass might be a beter start?

then again until you try it you never know..
ist update for months n months..
Fermnting: not a lot..
Conditioning: nowt
Maturing: Challenger smash, and a kit lager
Drinking: dry one minikeg left in the store

The straining of the liquor should hopefully be achieved by the BIAB bag. although I was wondering about using it during cooling to ensure maximum contact with my Persian cooler, at which point my bag is out and there are hops to worry about.

And I have to admit I have no idea if my pump has the oomph to spin it. On that front it would be no worse than a non spinning spray ball in the mash.

And faint heart and all that.

I just use a spray head on the wort return, it does the job and temperatures are stable. I have even tried a mechanical stirrer to gently mix the wort/grain it worked perfectly but it made NO difference to the end result. KISS is the way forward and I doubt that the spray ball will make any noticeable difference to the beer in your glass.

Curiosity and the pleasure of tinkering with your brewery and still reasons to try and I hope you get a better result than I did :)

Very well said. :D

As I like to think to myself:
