Thermometer Problems

Post by Tippler » Sat Aug 05, 2017 8:42 pm

I just turned on my ETI Gourmet digital thermometer https://thermometer.co.uk/catering-ther ... meter.html to check the ambient temperature and it showed 95°C! It continues to show this kind of temperature every time I switch it on, even after calibrating (HOLD+ON). It has never been dropped or immersed, but it is out of guarantee.

Has anyone else had this kind of problem (and fixed it), or should I be looking for a new one? If so, what are your thought on not-too-expensive digital thermometers?

I use a cheap probe thermometer, the sort that are £3 from eBay. But I back it up with a caged dairy thermometer or an old yoghurt thermometer.

I reckon you could get your thermometer for a fiver

could be as simple as just needing a new battery afaik some types of sensors/or support circuitry can throw out a default value if under powered??

fwiw i have a couple of the thermometers linked to above (#1), and while they take a lot longer to finalise on a reading and have a much smaller dispaly both read within 1c of my eti thermapen ;) But its always the thermapen i reach for when brewing or cooking, but my eyesight and capacity for patience are both limited. ..

Buy one of these. They are accurate and have high/low alarms. Ideal for heating sparge water etc. Plus they won't break the bank. At this price buy two and have a spare.

Thanks for all your suggestions. I tried changing the battery, but it seems to make no difference. The funny thing is that it appears to be working fine, except for the fact that it displays the wrong temperature! I am wondering if the difference is consistent, in which case I could still use it by just knocking off 70° or so, though that seems a bit like a recipe for disaster. So I shall check out the others that you have suggested. A friend reckons that this one from IKEA is reliable too http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/products/cook ... -20103016/.

Might be worth an email to ETI, include a link to the thread here or suggest that your contacting them after discussion in the uks' brewing forums ;) you may ?? receive some customer service above and beyond expectations with the hope for a positive viral response?? then again perhaps not?? but worth a punt perhaps..

They work very well for their intended purpose. That is cooking meat in an oven. I have one and I also have the ETI that I recommended above that is no good for cooking meat but it is excellent for brewing.
