I think the point about stirring vs shaking was in regards to oxygenation, with shaking being better as stir plates were not designed to aerate, but to keep a substance in suspension. The lack of aeration can cause starters to have off flavours. I think the shear stress thing was added on to the argument to add weight to the shaken not stirred idea. £100 stir plate and £25 flask vs a 5L spring water bottle, I know which method I prefer.

I'll stick to the evidence in the yeast book from two respected authors. Stir plates grow more yeast than any other method which would indicate they are better at aerating. Off flavours are irrelevant though are you are growing not fermenting so the yeast will most likely produce different smells and flavours especially given the ideal temps are 25°c.

I have a friend who has one of those. It works fine, albeit a bit noisy compared to more expensive models.
Ingredients: Water, Barley, Hops, Yeast, Seaweed, Blood, Sweat, The swim bladder of a sturgeon, My enemies tears, Scenes of mild peril, An otter's handbag and Riboflavin.

I've been cooking up 5l starters for 50l brews using a stir plate and bubbling air in through a .5u filter for quite a while now and the yeast just grows like crazy, lag time after pitching is never more than an hour or two, so I'm pretty sold on the stir plate.
I didn't know that optimum growth temperature was as high as 30c - tend to set mine to about 22-24c, will have to turn up the heat on the next one...
