Mains terminal type connector alternatives

Post by chris2012 » Sat Feb 10, 2018 12:16 am

I've been looking at something like https://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/distribu ... s/4132319/ but am really struggling to find cheaper alternatives.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated!

I'm looking for something I can mount to a steel backplate in an enclosure

I could deal with 240VAC, 16A rails. With at least 5 terminals on each rail, with around 3 rails.

can be screwed to a enclosure, if you want them as rails you just cross connect along one side.

I could be mistaken but isn't that for connecting 2 wires together in each 'block', rather that all 12 terminals together?

I just found this video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SBCH_6k ... u.be&t=532
Which looks good, just trying to find the name for the plastic things

Edit: pretty sure it's this - https://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/non-fuse ... s/0424759/

Now to find the bus bar thing

The terminals you have linked is what i use everyday at work. Commonly called 'klippons' and can be mounted on din-rail or g-rail. They come in all sorts of current/wire rating. They also do earth terminals and fused terminals. Download the klippon catalogue to see the range

Cheers, good to hear they're often used :)

I found http://uk.farnell.com/phoenix-contact/u ... dp/2068531

http://uk.farnell.com/phoenix-contact/f ... pd-mi-acce
Which would save using the screws I guess.

I'll have a look at the klippon catalogue too, thanks.

Edit:

I notice with the klippon stuff , there seems to be a number of types : push in, tension fit, clamping yoke and stud tech.

So I'm bit unsure which is the preferred type?

Make sure you get the right ones for the size of cable/wire you are using. They are designed to give a secure connection providing you are not using a wire too small for the connection (or trying to push a bigger wire in than the terminal can accept.

Another option is wagos ,5 linked terminals ,rated for 32A https://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Products/WA415.html to mount 2 on a din rail use https://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Products/WA500.html and if you dont want to use din rail or want to add some strain relief https://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Products/WA505.html

Oooh neat! I have been told about wagos, but couldn't for the life of me work out how to attach them to a DIN rail, that's very interesting.

I pretty much exclusively use the screw terminal clamping yoke type. For bigger cables depending on the application i use the stud type. But this is for bigger cables (used some 70mm^2 stud type a couple of days ago). For the size of wires/cables you will be using the screw type are.best.

Awesome thanks for the pointer. Out of interest would the push/tension fit only be used for low current stuff?

Not necessarly. But I would only use the push type with solid wire. Or if using stranded cable, first crimp the wire end first before then inserting into the push fit. I would not just push the standed wie into a push fit, this is where a screwed terminal would be better suited. Crimping the ends of stranded wire should be done anyway. Bit do not crimp solid wire as you will not get a solid connection.
