Help! - Swan tea urn - new element?

Post by mik82 » Mon Nov 19, 2007 8:31 pm

Hi
A while ago I bought and subsequently broke a 6 gallon Swan tea urn. It had a 3000W plate type element which I've never been able to find a replacement for. Consequently I have a 6 gallon stainless tank with a huge hole in the bottom. I don't want to throw it away as it is otherwise in perfect condition (and I have an immersion chiller that I made to fit.) Does anyone have any idea where I can find a new element. I've tried a couple of online places with huge stocks of replacement electrical parts and they didn't have them.

Cheers
Mike

No, I broke mine ages ago. I've been using a plastic bucket fitted with kettle elements for boiling ever since but I'd like to use the bucket as the water boiler and the tea urn as the wort boiler.

Totally different kind of element I'm afraid. Mine is a disc, like the element of a solid hob. Thanks.

shame it's such a large diameter hole or you could have converted to a burco element.

Well suppliers are saying the part is obsolete - makes me wish I'd bought a Burco originally! I'm sure there must be some way of welding an adapter to fit a burco element. Anyone any idea how much this would cost?

Have a disc of Stainless cut to fit just inside the diameter of the urn. Then use JB weld to 'glue' it to the bottom. JB Weld is food safe, and heat resistant to 300C. I've used it in my FV and its going to repair a cracked weld in my HLT.. Its liquid enough to be carefully run round the internal edge to form a fillet removing questions about sanitary effect . . . . if Boiling wort isn't sanitary enough :)

You can then fit a burco element or two.

Does it stand up to prolonged boiling then?

Definately...up to 3 hours at 100 deg c +...as proven by consistant use in the V1 brewery 8)
Just make sure the mating surfaces are well ruffed before bonding.

If all else fails, put the dead element back, cut a hole in the side and install a kettle element, perhaps?
