Why run the risk? It seems possible that as the flow rate falls the level in the tube falls. I did try it horizontally and could hear the wort in the RIMS heating very rapidly and it didn't cure the problem.

I'm gonna give it a shot tomorrow vertical again with the sensor on the side.

What size sensor do you run? Mine is 30mm.

Don't recall but that sounds very close, it is quite short.

Ok, here's how I fixed it up. If I used the sensor on the side, it took too long to circulate and read the temp. What I did instead, was block the top side outlet, and then install a tee on the top of the tube. On the side of the tee I put my sensor, which goes right to the middle of the tee. The flow, which now goes out the top, flows right over this sensor. The reaction time is much quicker, and I don't experience any air traps.

sounds like you have it sorted, perhaps stick a glass cap on the now unused side port and have it as an inspection window, it may provide you with a visual indicator of any flow problems? The top T is the suggested solution for the rims rocket set up too.

You can get a Tri Clamp sight glass for around £30. Not sure how it would work if placed on one of the side ports as per your set up though?
