Local Water Reports

(That's water to the rest of us!) Beer is about 95% water, so if you want to discuss water treatment, filtering etc this is the place to do it!

Cambridge - Cherry Hinton area (Cambridge Water)

"Under the Water Supply (Water Quality) Regulations 2000 (amended 2007) we are not required to test for these parameters in distribution however they are monitored in the raw water. Cherry Hinton comes from a number of different sources. Please find below the average value for each parameter"

Calcium - 125 mg/l
Magnesium - 7.6 mg/l
Sodium 14 mg/l
Sulphate - 51 mg/l
Chloride - 31 mg/l
Alkalinity – 228 as mg/l CaCO3 (variable from 190 to 260 mg/l).

[Alkalinity of 277mg/l required to balance milliequivs in Graham's liquor calc]

Local Water Reports.

Here's one from Veolia South East (used to be the Folkestone and District Water company) there's a map on their website which covers the area they supply (see below for detail). Further to your e-mail & our telephone conversation yesterday morning, I have attached the 2011 water quality summary for the area in which you reside. The information has been collated from the results of samples that we have obtained from randomly selected properties across the zone, throughout the calendar year.

Unfortunately, you will see that the only parameter in the schedule that is mentioned on your list is pH. The last revision of the Drinking Water Directive in 2004, removed the necessity for us to monitor the levels of alkalinity, calcium and the like from Customer taps; instead focusing on monitoring those parameters that potentially pose a risk to human health.

The water that we supply to your area comes from three sources in the Rakeshole Valley, between Densole and Denton. I have listed the minimum and maximum levels found in the raw water during 2011 in the table below

Parameter
Minimum
Maximum

Alkalinity (mg/l)
292
306
Calcium as Ca (mg/l)
100
115
Magnesium as Mg (mg/l)
2.39
2.82
Sodium as Na (mg/l)
12.4
13.2
Sulphate as S04 (mg/l)
10
14
Chloride as Cl (mg/l)
24
27
Hydrogen ion (pH units)
7.0
7.5
Total Hardness as Ca (mg/l)
111
122

We do not monitor for carbonate specifically. We monitor for total hardness as Ca; you could take that and take away the calcium and magnesium content, but that which remains will be carbonate + bicarbonate.

I hope this information is sufficient for your needs, if not please contact me and I will try to assist you further.

Yours sincerely
Stephanie

Some of the values are quite variable so I'm not sure how to take these. Any suggestions would be greatly welcomed.

Just had a nice reply from the folks at Bournemouth Water (They're called Sembcorp this week apparently).

Here's what they came up with:

pH: 7.7
Sulphate (mg SO4/l): 28.6
Magnesium (mg Mg/l): 3.24
Sodium Total (mg Na/l): 16.8
Chloride (mg Cl/l): 30.2
Calcium (mg Ca/l): 85.32
Alkalinity (mg/l CaCO3): 194

And so very conveniently my order of AMS came through from Murphy's!

Now I just need a free day... #-o

I've got

Calcium 4.7375 mg/l
Magnesium 2.3688 mg/l
Residual Chlorine (free) 0.17 mg/l
Residual Chlorine (total) 0.24 mg/l
Sodium 24.04 mg/l

Average hardness 9.5 mg/l calcium

Salifert test kit gives alkalinity reading of 0.33 milliequivs/l

(Full report here)

I've put these figures into Graham's calculator as best I can, and I have everything it says to add (plus some CRS which I needn't have bought) apart from Calcium Chloride, which I have no idea where to get.

Can I still give water treatment a go for my next brew or shall I not bother?

If I get the Calcium Chloride from somewhere, will the additions in the calculator ensure the correct mash pH, or is this a separate issue?

Was so hoping this was going to be quite simple!

Has anyone had a water report done for the Bulwell area (Nottingham). I've been on the Severn Trent website, but they don't give you all the info us brewers need! So, I'm hoping someone has used 'Murphys' for a report. [-o<

Re my post above. I have been taking the lower figures to input into the water treatment table and the results have been most impressive.

Bristol Water has a page which allows you to find the alkalinity in mg/L CaCO3 by simply entering your postcode.

http://www.bristolwater.co.uk/customers ... urArea.asp

My supply zone, "Filton & Northville", is 156 mg/L CaCO3.

Handy.
