De ionised vs bottled for Starsan.

Post by LeeH » Mon Jul 01, 2013 6:30 pm

I guess as long as the PH ok both are the same?

What is the idea ph range?

I've been using de ionised water with no issues but bottled water is cheaper so I thought I might switch.

Cheers.

I think both are ok. As far as I am aware the ph needs to be below 3 which is achievable using tesco mineral water

I've tried and doesn't work with my hard water. :(
It goes very cloudy as soon as I add SS and pH isn't low enough.

I use still Ashbeck water from Tesco

£1.10 for 5L.
Just add 8cc of Starsan and shake to make 5L of sanitiser.

You then also get a handy 5L plastic demijohn I use for loads of things.

eg Lambic version of Seymour Chocolate Milk Stout

Cheers Befuddler , I didn't know it was RO.

Really useful as I have fairly high sulphate and chloride too. RO water useful for brewing many German / Czech brews and others.

I'd strongly suspect it isn't ro, where did you find that info?

Can't remember where I read it tbh, but the filtering method isn't really relevant. What matters is that there's next to no mineral content in it, which makes it perfect for starsan or diluting hard water for brewing.

But really crap for drinking......are you sure?

Mechanical filtration is what I understood for any of those RO does not make sense for drinking water, indeed most people with RO units have a seperate tap which is direct for drinking water.

I may be wrong about it being RO, but it's definitely very low in mineral content and alkalinity. Someone had it tested by Murphy's a while back. I've personally done a KH test on it, and it changed colour after 1 drop.

It's not supposed to be healthy mineral water, it's just supposed to be cheap.

Thanks Befuddler for mentioning previous test.
I found it here:Tesco Bottled Water
The reason behind the two different samples was to see if there was any regional difference, very little it would seem.

The tests were carried out on the 3rd November 2011.

Tesco Kent
Mg 1.2 Magnesium
Ca 8.2 Calcium
Mn 0.0 Manganese
K 0.0 Potassium
Na 9.0 Sodium
NH3 0.0 Ammonia
SO4 7.2 Sulphate
NO3 1.0 Nitrate
Cl 12.7 Chloride
F 0.0 Fluoride
PO4 2.8 Phosphate
Alkalinity (CaCO3) 20.0
Hardness (CaCO3) 25.41

Tesco Newcastle
Mg 1.3 Magnesium
Ca 8.2 Calcium
Mn 0.0 Manganese
K 1.3 Potassium
Na 9.5 Sodium
NH3 0.0 Ammonia
SO4 8.5 Sulphate
NO3 0.9 Nitrate
Cl 13.4 Chloride
F 0.0 Fluoride
PO4 4.1 Phosphate
Alkalinity (CaCO3) 16.0
Hardness (CaCO3) 25.83
Thanks Barneey =D>

Those figures are WAY lower than mine
eg
Cl 13.4 v mine: 107
SO4 8.5 v mine: 131

Looking forward to trying out a brew with this. :D
